Gem's Story

MAY 21, 2011 UPDATE: Gem is settling into her new foster home. This girl is very very shy. Nearly unapproachable at the moment. At her last foster home I think she was comfortable for she knew the routine and the pace of the household and kennel. Now that she is in a new place she is outside of her comfort zone. It always takes awhile for a new dog to settle in and realize that everything is going to be OK.

Many dogs accept moves and new situations with a happy smile and a wagging tail. A dog that was never socialized as a puppy always seems to have a hard time with newness and different experiences.

Here, Gem started out in one of the side yards with 3 other dogs. Today we moved her into the main dog yard. For now she is on a chain, the only dog in our kennel that is on a chain. Everyone else lives in the house or huge fenced areas with some friends.

All the other dogs have met Gem. She is totally accepting of other dogs. It is people that she fears. Zorba has taken quite a shine to her and he goes down and actually gets into her dog house WITH her. Very cute. Luckily it is an extra big dog house.

As soon as she becomes more comfortable with our routine we will let her loose and give her the freedom that will help to expand her thinking and understand that we are to be trusted. She doesn't seem to be a digger or a fence jumper and our big main yard has gates that only go into another fenced area. So the chances of her bolting out of the fenced area is very small. We are excited to run her and will do some on the 4 wheeler when it is cool. Her last foster home said that she runs great.

JANUARY 29, 2007 UPDATE: Gem’s foster wrote in with an update: “Gem is a young adult Alaskan. She has a short sprint-dog coat, but I don't think she's a pointer cross. Her markings say she has at least some Wright/Champaine breeding. She was one of those "too slow" owner turn-ins to the shelter. She's shy, but has made great progress. She's catchable when running loose in the yard and is approachable in the team. She doesn't chew lines or harnesses, is a decent worker, and has an OK trot & lope. She's not terribly fast, but is enthusiastic. Fairly quiet; no annoying habits. I ran her in lead once and she did fine, but so far I only have a few runs on her. I think she'd be best in a recreation team."

MARCH 30, 2006: Two of our volunteers ran Gem in a team and had this to say: “This girl is a diamond in the rough. At the shelter you can barely touch this dog. She is very shy and unsocialized and a bit freaky when you approach her. But get her out of the shelter and into a working team and this girl is a TOTALLY different dog. At the truck she was wagging her tail and wanting to go and run. She is a young female on the smaller side (around 43 pounds) who wore a red/green size sprint harness. She was in swing with one of my dogs and was very friendly to her and no aggression. She did really well in the team. This was a very fast team and we did close to 5 miles. I don't think she has the conditioning on her that all the other dogs did, but she was a good contributor. She dipped a bit but I think that was just lack of conditioning. I think with lots of patience and love, this girl would come around to be a good dog for any sort of running. She has a really nice gait and was easy to handle at the truck. She doesn't present well at the shelter because of her shyness but don't let that dissuade you from looking at this girl. She is black/white and brown with very blue eyes.”

In order to adopt an SCL dog, see "How To Adopt" and download an Adoption Application; we can't consider you without one!
