Meet Gary

Hi, my name is Gary! I'm a PURPLE pawprint, which means I will fit well into a home that meets some specific criteria. Here is what would work best for me in my new home:

-Personality: Friendly when comfortable, but can be sensitive. Awkward - still learning how to "dog". Sweet boy. A staff favorite!
-Can Live with Kids: No. Gary can be sensitive to some handling and would probably do best in a calm adult-only home.
-Can Live with Cats: Unknown history - will need proper introductions to ensure everyone gets along.
-Can Live with Dogs: No, Gary would benefit from some responsible socialization with other dogs before living with them.
-Can do Apartment Living: Ideally no (as Gary can be vocal and sensitive to his surroundings), but may be okay depending on the situation. Up to counselor's discretion.
-Potty Trained: Appears so!
-Bite History: No
-Positive Reward Based Obedience Classes Required: Yes, one private lesson (but more encouraged)
-Energy Level: Medium
-Needs Medical Procedure Before Going Home: Yes, a neuter
-Additional Information:
Gary is a special boy who has quickly won the hearts of pretty much every staff member here at WHS. Gary came to us in terrible condition. He was neglected, emaciated, and likely would not have survived much longer living on his own. Since being in our care, Gary has gained a considerable amount of weight AND a fantastic personality. He went from being shutdown and standoffish, to a total sweetheart in just a matter of weeks. Due to his traumatic history, Gary would likely do best with a DOG-EXPERIENCED adopter who can read his body language and respect his boundaries. He's going to benefit greatly from stability, a routine, and consistent positive reinforcement based training. Gary would do best in a QUIET home with one or two people who have plenty of time to dedicate to his training/socialization.

If you are interested in adopting, please fill out an application on our website (www.whatcomhumane.org/adopt) or in person at our facility. We recommend calling into the shelter after your application has been submitted so our front desk can give you next steps on our adoption process.
