Meet Gabriel

Meet angel Gabriel aka Gabe!

DOB Jan 2/22, Gabe is a male Golden Retriever/Mini Poodle mix puppy who joined our rescue from a commercial breeder when he was exhibiting stiffness in his hind legs.

After extensive investigations through both an ortho specialist and internal medicine specialist, along with very specific testing incl DNA, Gabe has unfortunately been diagnosed with muscular dystrophy

As a reputable rescue devoted unconditionally to our dogs for life, Gabe's medical expenses related to this condition will be covered by our rescue for his entire life.

We are seeking a very special family to adopt him, with full support from me/the rescue for his entire life, related to any further complications that may result from his MD in his future

His adoptive family will be responsible for his food (at a discount) and will also be responsible, as with any dog, for his regular vet care expenses such as vaccination boosters and all usual vet care that anyone would provide for their dog, Hobo Haven Rescue will be responsible for his lifetime for his Muscular Dystrophy related vet care.

Here is also more info from his specialist's clinic regarding this diagnosis

Gabe's foster bio is below as well for more info about who he is

YOUR FOSTER DOG'S NAME: Gabe
YOUR FOSTER DOG'S ENERGY LEVEL: Low
PLEASE ELABORATE ON YOUR EXERCISE ROUTINE WITH YOUR FOSTER DOG (IE HOW MANY WALKS PER DAY, HOW LONG, INDOOR PLAYTIME, OUTDOOR PLAYTIME, MENTAL STIMULATION ACTIVITIES, TIME SPENT TRAINING ETC)* Gabe doesn't walk far and needs breaks. He requires a fenced yard in his new home to snuffle around and play at his own speed since he is not able to go for long hikes or very far on walks. He plays for a few minutes with one of the other dogs and then rests, then plays with a toy (by himself or with someone else - human or dog), then naps, then plays for a few minutes, etc. All of our walks are "sniffy walks" so he gets to explore the neighbourhood slowly at his own pace/distance tolerated.
IS YOUR FOSTER DOG FOOD MOTIVATED? Yes, but we are very careful with the food he gets.
GOOD WITH DOGS? Gabe is good with everyone! He's yet to meet a dog, regardless of size or energy level that he doesn't like!
HOW DOES YOUR FOSTER DOG RESPOND TO DOGS MET ON WALKS? He barely even notices. If he's resting, he'll just watch them go by and if he's walking, he'll just happily keep on trotting past.
HOW DOES YOUR FOSTER DOG RESPOND TO PEOPLE MET ON WALKS? If Gabe hears a person on the walk fawning over him, he'll go toward them and might move in for a sniff and a pet but other than that, he just walks on by.
GOOD WITH STRANGERS? PLEASE PROVIDE PEOPLE INTERACTION DETAILS. Gabe greets everyone with his little butt swinging back and forth and his tail wagging away! If another dog is barking for attention, then he'll chime in (when someone comes into my home) but other than that, he'll wait to be petted. Sometimes, if there is one close by, he'll go grab a toy and come trotting over to present it to the guest. He isn't a huge snuggler with guests that I've had in the home but he loves to greet them and will play with them if they engage him in a game of tug. He hasn't shown any signs of fear of men, children, etc.
GOOD WITH CATS? Yes
GUARDING ISSUES? None
HOUSETRAINED? Yes
CRATE TRAINED? Yes Gabe used to sleep in his crate when he was younger but since he hasn't made a mess in the house in months, he no longer sleeps in his crate. When he WAS sleeping in there, a simple "bed time" and a treat thrown to the back of the crate would have him happily going in there.
IS YOUR FOSTER DOG DESTRUCTIVE? No
DOES YOUR FOSTER DOG SHOW SIGNS OF SEPARATION ANXIETY? No
PLEASE ELABORATE ON YOUR FOSTER DOG'S LEASH SKILLS. Gabe is great on walks! I do use a long line but he's never far from me (unless I walk him with another of the dogs, then he tries to keep up with them).
OKAY WITH MANIPULATIONS? Yes
He doesn't LOVE his nails being trimmed but I'm able to do so. He usually just lays across my lap and I feed him his treats whilst I cut his nails. We do a lot of "look? look ears", "look? look belly", etc. so he's fine with me lifting his tail, palpations, putting on his harness, etc.
PERSONALITY? Oh my gosh! Gabe is a HOOT! He isn't afraid to use his voice when he needs something (to go outside, for help onto the couch, for pets, etc.).He's spunky, lovable, loving and just an incredibly sweet boy. He'll just look at you with his soulful eyes and you can't help but want to kiss his face! (which, he happily accepts!!!)
THINGS NEEDING IMPROVEMENT? I honestly cannot think of a single thing that I would say needs improvement but he does need some help coming down the stairs. He goes up stairs really slowly so I walk behind him when he goes upstairs and when he goes down them in the morning, I walk in front or wait at the bottom of the stairs so he feels a wee bit more comfortable for him. It's a good little workout for him BUT he should never be left alone to do a full flight of stairs on his own (the couple of steps down from my porch to the back yard is fine).
Gabe knows "touch", "trade", "no thank you", "no teeth", "stand" and his name

An adoption application must be submitted to be considered. If the dog's listing is still showing, they are still accepting applications.

https://hobohavenrescue.ca/dog-adoption-application

Must be located within 60 mins of St Jacobs (this is in order to be within driving distance to our vet/his specialist in case further care related to his MD is needed in his future)

Notes:
Children must be 8yrs+ and dog savvy
Pools must be separately fenced from yard
This dog requires a full fenced yard and someone home often/not gone for more than 3-4 hrs at a time.
Another suitable canine friend is ideal for Gabe's needs

Hobo Haven is located in St Jacobs Ontario.

For anyone possibly interested in adopting from Hobo Haven, here are a few, but not all, criteria to be aware of:

An adoption application must be completed and approved, vet references reviewed, as well as a home visit (Zoom during COVID), prior to meeting available dogs. All dogs are placed in loving foster homes during their time with us, we do not have a shelter to visit.

We do not allow applicants to visit until pre-approved for adoptions. Any questions may be emailed to hobohavenpetrescue@gmail.com

Due to the high volume of applications received for our dogs, priority of replies will be given to applicants who meet the criteria mentioned in the pet's profile.
Please do not ask us to make exceptions, we set these protocols and policies for the dog's best interests which are always our highest priority.

Emails are best, I work long hours at my full time job as well as in rescue and am not able to answer or return phone calls during work hours. Please email for quickest response.
