Meet Frankie

Meet Frankie, a beautiful 2-year-old purebred silver female Lab! Frankie’s first two years were a bit rough as she lived on two different puppy mill farms where they attempted to breed her. Lucky for her, she was not able to get pregnant, and Brookline stepped in to rescue her when the last breeder wanted to rehome this sweet, young girl.

Frankie’s experiences on the farms left her with some distrust and fear of humans, and since being rescued she has come a long way and has learned how to be a dog and how wonderful it is to live in a safe and loving environment. She quickly developed bonds with her foster mom and family in foster care and lapped up all the attention and love she could. To help Frankie become even more comfortable meeting new people, she has been living at Bedminster Canine Kamp (BCK) where she has had the opportunity to have controlled socialization experiences in an environment that is comfortable and familiar to her. She has done beautifully and she now warms up very quickly to new people, especially once she learns they want to pet her or give her treats. This Velcro cuddle bug has become more confident and independent since her arrival in foster care.

Frankie has been great with all the dogs, male and female, she has met while at BCK, and while in foster care she loved to play with her younger foster fur brother once she was settled into her foster home. She is a very good player, very gentle and sweet. She would probably do best with a confident and independent dog who would not be too pushy or in her face. She is unknown with cats, but she does have a bit of a prey drive with squirrels so living with cats may not be the best idea unless they are a very dog savvy cat.

When Frankie was first rescued, she had a terrible skin infection/keratosis on her nose and on the fringes of ears, which was originally thought to be caused by ringworm and she was treated for that by being isolated at a vet until she was confirmed negative. While in foster care, she was seen by a dermatologist to determine the cause of the residual keratosis and it she was found to have a hereditary condition called Hereditary Nasal Parakeratosis of Labrador Retrievers. Because she went untreated for so long the keratosis was found not just on her nose but also on the fringes of her ears and surrounding her pads. Luckily, this condition is manageable with over the counter products. The goal is to keep the affected areas soft so that the skin does not crack and bleed and end up with an infection requiring antibiotics. Frankie is otherwise healthy, up to date on her vaccines and has been spayed.

Frankie has come a long way in learning how to live in a home. She is house broken and has started to learn some commands, but she will need to continue to learn manners in her forever home. She loves to chew on elk antler bones and loves, loves, loves a Kong filled with training treats and peanut butter. She is very food and treat motivated and sits reliably on command now. She does really well on the leash for walks and does not pull at all except when she sees a squirrel. She is also crate-trained and sleeps in her crate at night without a peep as long as the crate is placed in the same room as her humans.

Frankie is a super sweet girl who would do best in a calm home where she is able to feel safe and get lots of pets, love, and attention. If you are looking for a young lab who has the calm demeanor of an older lab and will be a faithful companion and consistent cuddler, then Frankie just may be the girl for you!
