Meet Finn (courtesy post)
Finn has been a part of our family since 2021, and we did bring him home from an animal shelter after he’d spent several months there. He did come to us with bite marks on his nose but we are unsure of the history there. Since he made it home with us, we saw issues with resource guarding / food aggression and he was anxious.
He is a very smart dog, and otherwise SUCH a sweet and good boy. He has completed group training classes and additional in-home training, he has a lot of skills he is happy to show off. However, even with his training, his resource guarding has remained and has been attributed to his instincts as a herding dog & spending several months in a shelter before we took him in.
We have managed this for the past few years very successfully by limiting triggers and separating him as needed. He will give warnings (growling, nipping) if he feels he must guard something. This has always allowed us to manage his behaviors & separate him without incident. With a new baby in the home, his guarding triggers can be somewhat unpredictable. He is in need of a home without children. Our home is not large enough to keep them both separated and happy long-term. Separating them over the past few months has seemed to heighten his anxiety.
He does well with being bathed and brushed at home, he is muzzle trained for nail clippings and vet visits (not his favorite things). He is currently on once daily medication for his bladder and has no issues as long as he takes it. He does take CBD supplements as needed as well, and these help him with fireworks and thunderstorms especially.
Finn would do so well in a home without small children. He gets along with other dogs, he lives with 2 small dogs now & makes friends easily at the dog park and on walks. He loves to run outside in the yard, he loves car rides, fetch & long walks/hikes. He is trained to walk very well with a gentle leader & is crate trained. He loves being outside and would run around the yard for hours if we let him. Again he is fine with other dogs, we just feed them him separately and do not give edible toys. He has been fine around cats and cows, just curious about them.
We live next door to chickens and he just watches them through the fence & has never been aggressive towards them, but he’s also never been freely around them. He is not trained as a livestock dog.
