Meet Fawn(ADOPTED!)

**FAWN HAS BEEN ADOPTED!!** Pal's Place would like to introduce to you an exceptional dog looking for a special home. Fawn came to us in January 2020 from an overburdened animal control facility in Kentucky. At the time of her rescue, she was a walking skeleton and weighed only 30 pounds. Unfortunately, it is not that uncommon for emaciated dogs to come through the rescue. There are many stray dogs in the area Fawn was rescued from, and at first, we thought her body condition was due to her not being fed regularly. We started feeding her several small meals a day, totaling 6 cups of food, but she seemed to lose more weight day after day and became weaker and weaker. She could barely stand up for more than a couple of minutes at a time and looked miserable.

After about a week in our care and the continual decline despite regular feedings, we became suspicious that EPI could be the culprit. EPI is a condition in which the pancreas cannot produce sufficient pancreatic enzymes on its own to digest fats, carbohydrates, and protein leading to poor absorption of vital nutrients. Fawn went back to our partner clinic for a GI panel, bloodwork, and an EPI test. After a battery of tests, an EPI diagnosis was confirmed. Fawn was started on digestive enzymes immediately, and within just a couple of days of starting the medication, she gained 4 pounds! After about two weeks on the medication, she started to become brighter and more playful. Her coat, once dull and brittle, started to become softer and thicker. Fawn has been gaining about 10 pounds a month. She currently weighs 50 pounds and still has about 10-15 more pounds to go to reach an ideal weight, but we are so thrilled with her progress. Fawn's condition is not curable, but it is very manageable with medication. She will need to have enzymes mixed in with every meal. The enzymes run about $80-100 for a 6-8 week supply. She will also need monthly subcutaneous B12 injections. It sounds a bit daunting, but it's actually easy to learn to do at home, and she doesn't even notice the injection when given.

As Fawn started getting stronger and more active, we noticed that she favors one leg a bit. We brought her back to the vet for x-rays, and we learned that she suffered a severely broken pelvis at some point in the past. The pelvis has healed but not in the correct place. This is not causing her any pain anymore, and there is not much that can be done to correct it at this point, but she will always move with a bit of an odd gait.

While Fawn has some special medical needs, she is practically perfect in every other way. She's calm, gentle, well-behaved, and mild-mannered. She greets everyone politely and with an abundance of tail wags and kisses. Fawn is quiet and well-behaved in the home. She is housebroken when kept on a regular schedule, and she enjoys her crate. She adores children and other dogs ? We cannot say for sure what her exact breed mix is, but we can see some Collie, Retriever, and maybe even Shepherd and Husky in her lineage, and she is estimated to be around 2 years old.

Fawn is fully vaccinated, microchipped, heartworm negative, fecal tested negative, and taking monthly flea and heartworm preventative. She has also had a full blood and GI panel and hip x-rays. She will be spayed soon. Her adoption fee to the rescue is $375. Fawn is in a foster home in Chicago and can be seen by appointment after an application has been submitted and approved.
