Ellie Black Labrador Retriever & Flat-Coated Retriever Mix Cincinnati, OH

Meet Ellie, she is a sweet senior lady who come to us from a rural shelter in WV. The shelter thought that she was quite old, but once we cleaned her up and did a complete blood panel our vet estimated she is around 8 or 9 years old.

Ellie is an easy girl to love. She is completely house trained and she doesn't need to be crated when we leave. She gets along fine with our two dogs. She is past the point of wanting to engage in playtime, but they peacefully coexist in the same house.

She is very alert and is always watching and listening. If she hears noises on TV she cocks her head trying to figure out what is going on. She LOVES to be petted to lay near you. However she is also fine to lay on her own bed and chill out.

Ellie has arthritis in her hind legs. Our vet believes it's her knees which indicates old untreated ACL tears. She doesn't like to walk on slippery floors and can be stiff getting up. She recently received an injection for arthritis and I've noticed she is more active and is even walking on our hardwood floor. She will always need treatment for her arthritis to have a good quality of life.

When she was brought to Ohio she weighed a whopping #86, and it is obvious she is uncomfortable carrying the extra weight.

She is on a diet and we've integrated 15 minute walks into her daily routine. Her new owner must be dedicated to getting her down to a healthy weight (which is around #65) which will lessen the pressure on her knees.

She absolutely loves the short strolls and looks for her leash when she knows walk time is approaching. She may be carrying an extra #20 but she walks out of our gate with her tail wagging and excitement in her eyes. It's great to see her enjoying this new chapter in life.
