Meet Ellen Degeneruff

Please fill out the application now if you are interested as we are still closed to the public and doing meet & greets and adoptions by appointment only.

Ellen Degeneruff, aka our "Miracle Dog" is a German Shepherd and Pit Bull mix girl that was born in July 2020 and weighs 33.5 pounds.

Ellen is such a brave girl. At only 10 months old, she has been through so much trauma and pain that most dogs would never experience. Found as a stray, Ellen had multiple cuts, scrapes, punctures, and fractures all over her body. One of her wounds was so deep, you could see her hip bone. After months of antibiotics and rest, Ellen's wounds finally cleared up. She had several x-rays in anticipation of completing FHO (femoral head osteotomy) surgery, however, by the time she was fully healed, her hip practically healed itself, removing the need for surgery.

Four months later and Ellen is finally all healed up and ready for her forever home. Because of the type of her extensive wounds and how she was found, our assumption is that she was tied to a tree with a wire tie-out and a larger dog or coyote must have attacked her. During the scuffle, it's likely that her leg had been bound up in the wire. We are not sure how she broke free, but we also believe she may have been hit by a car during her escape. Ellen has only been on this Earth for 10 months and she is already covered in scars. She handled her healing process so well and has always been sweet and loving to her caretakers.

Despite everything Ellen has been through, she is still a happy puppy who wants attention and affection. She can be a little nervous at first when meeting new people, but warms up quickly if she has a human buddy to tell her it's okay. Ellen does enjoy having other dogs around, but can get overwhelmed if they do not give her space. We do require a Meet & Greet if you have another dog in your home. Based on her veterinary report, she will need to be monitored for signs of hip dysplasia and will need to be given supplements. Her veterinarian also commented that Ellen is indeed "a miracle dog" and we couldn't agree more. She is more than ready to forget her past and deserves to look forward to a bright future!

Ellen recently attended an adoption event at Petsense on Signal Mountain Blvd. Here is what her handler had to say: "This is sweeeeeet, sweetie sweet Ellen Degeneruff. She’s also young and very shy. She gained confidence by the half hour hanging out with us Saturday!! She’d thrive in a home with a friendly pupper, maybe even a friendly cat. New people/new situations will make her unsure, but she’s easily swayed when surrounded with love, comfort and treats. She was a joy to watch relax and start smiling and engage in play with the other dogs and allow us to pet her. I don’t know how she’d do with a wild child, but I do think she’d bond tremendously with a gentle kiddo. She would be an IDEAL brunch/bar doggo and would be a great pet for someone willing to encourage and support her confidence!)"
