Meet Elke
This energetic youngster is Elke. She joins us from our friends at St. Louis County Animal Care, where she’d been adopted but then returned for her untrained and unmannerly behavior plus some seriously athletic fence-jumping and the occasional tendency to herd children.
While in foster, she’s done well with adult humans and has learned quickly that she enjoys playing with grade-school aged kids (no herding necessary!) Like most young dogs, she is very rambunctious! So she might be a bit much for families with no prior experience with GSDs or other high energy working breeds.
While in foster care, Elke has been busy learning manners, including polite leash behavior, recall, sit, and leave it. She will need her forever family to hold her accountable to her manners and help her continue to grow in her confidence and experience out in the world.
Elke says "nope" to female dog friends so far, but she has done quite well with male dogs her size or larger. Elke would be perfectly happy as an only dog for families with that preference..
Elke does have a very strong prey drive, and will chase those backyard critters with obvious intent. So, sadly, no kitties or very small pets for this girl’s future forever home.
Elke is only 1 year old, full of energy, and can easily clear a 3 1/2 foot fence with from a standing start and a 4 foot fence without breaking a sweat. So to
make burning off that youngster energy easier for her and her future family, a home with a tall fenced yard (at least 5 feet tall) would be ideal for our athletic girl here.
If you love the young-and-crazy days of German Shepherds and enjoy teaching them all about this big wide world, Elke might just be the girl for you!
