Meet Duke
But EVERY bit of me, from my super huge mouth to my long, wagging tail, is filled with love.
My name, when I was surrendered to CACC, was “Duke”—but I didn’t know it.
I DO know how to pee and poop in the back yard, and have had NO ACCIDENTS. Other than that, I don’t seem to have been taught very much at all. I understand a firm “no” when I’m doing something my foster family doesn’t want me to do. I want SO much to please them, that a strong verbal correction often sends me ten feet away, and flattens me to the floor, where I wait to find out whether they still like me.
The thing I’m working on most is my mouthiness. This is one big reason I need a forever home with lots of GS experience, and it would be best if there were no kids. I also am not clear on the fact that small dogs are dogs, not toys, so if I have a dog-sibling, (cats are a “no”) s/he should be medium to large size. My foster sister is a 54lb GS, and she bosses me around like crazy. I don’t mind that at all.
I am learning that opening my mouth to pull on clothing or an arm is NOT the way to get someone’s attention. Instead, I now bring a stuffed toy in my mouth, so that I won’t be tempted to lick or open my mouth while I’m getting a good head rub. I LOVE LOVE LOVE head rubs. And belly rubs. And chest rubs. I’m just a sponge for attention, though I settle down quickly, if you are busy.
I also GIVE attention. If you would like an audience while you cook, or clean, or do your office work—I will station myself nearby to watch and admire your every move.
I am crated at night, or when my foster family is out. I don’t like it, but I’m learning to accept it. I would be VERY happy to sleep near my people, if they would let me. Right now, I’m learning to “sit” and to “leave it.” I do not resource guard. You can take my toys or my food. That tells you a LOT about my character, since I am underweight, (my foster family is working to put some pounds on me) and might be expected to protect my bowl.
I seem happy to ride in a car, and if you have a place for me (I expect to reach 100 lbs), and train me, I would probably be an excellent take-along dog.
Since I didn’t know my name, and I’m a giant of a GSD, my foster family started calling me “Tiny D”. But what I really, really want is someone who will call me “MY” dog!
