7 years old and 20lbs, Duke came to JRTRO from Barbados where he had been found living on the streets. Finding himself in a foster home was confusing for Duke and he preferred being outside. While that is fine in a Barbados home, it will not work during a Canadian winter!
Duke is now comfortable to come into the house freely from outside and realizes the the dog bed is for him (previously he would sleep on the floor beside it). He prefers to sleep downstairs where he’s most relaxed and comfortable.
While Duke still tends to pace when he’s upstairs, his favourite thing in the evening is to curl up on your lap and get all the loving he can. Duke’s foster says he is the kindest soul she’s ever met and that you can do anything with him but his most favourite activity of all is being brushed. He is so happy to see you in the morning that he rubs against you like a cat.
Duke arrived in Canada with a bad ear infection which has been treated and is completely healed. The length of time it was untreated may possibly have affected his hearing as he gets startled by loud noises. He does come to you when you clap your hands.
Duke didn’t arrive to JRTRO house-trained but in the very short time he’s been in foster care he has done amazingly, thanks to his foster mom. He was unsure of treats at first but loves them now and really enjoys his food in general although he will graze rather than gobble.
Duke needs a quiet home. He is great with older, responsible and calm children, but too much commotion frightens him. He will get attached to you quickly and follow you everywhere. He is quickly learning how to walk well on the leash and he is perfect when he meets other dogs on his walks or when he goes visiting. He is an active dog and while he has short legs, he can walk a long way!
He might enjoy being with a companion dog, but that is not essential. He will need a securely fenced yard where he can enjoy his daily fun of running around chasing squirrels and chipmunks.
Duke has made great strides in the short time he has been in Canada. He will make a wonderful companion – if you are looking for a quiet, loving and gentle dog, then Duke is your man.
