Meet Duke

PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE BIO ON THIS DOG BEFORE REQUESTING AN APPLICATION. MANY OF OUR DOGS HAVE STRICT REQUIREMENTS FOR THEIR ADOPTION.

11 month old male Chihuahua, about 9 pounds.

I am a happy and affectionate boy who loves to share kisses and keep you laughing with my weird and wonderful sleeping positions.
I can be very shy and prefer to approach before being approached. I am curious and interested in other dogs my size but am intimidated by dogs much bigger than me and may run away. Although it takes me time to warm up to other dogs, I am much more comfortable with dogs than strange humans.

I don't bark often, but when I do, it's usually when I see brooms, mops, vacuums, and hear the occasional firetruck siren.

I may have been introduced to human food before because I sure do love the smell of it. Be careful what you leave around because I'm not afraid to steal a bite or two. I like my puppy meals too, but will pick around it throughout the day.

My favorite place to sleep is on the sofa, especially when my person is nearby. At night I like to sleep on the bed, but will settle with being in the same room on the floor nearby. I really don't like it when I'm left alone, especially at night. When I am crated at bedtime it makes me cry, and sometimes it takes me a while to settle down.

I'm always curious about what my human is doing and will follow them around to see what they are up to.

I know that peeing inside is a naughty thing to do, but when you don't listen to me, I don't know what else to do. Before I do that, I will walk to the front door, pace in your sight and whimper softly when all else fails. I'll also try to hold it as much as possible to stop pee from touching the ground when I can't hold it anymore.

If my crate is left open in the daytime, or when I am inside it at night, I will pee inside if I have to. However I love to run around in the grass and feel the wind in my fur before I handle my business.

I enjoy playing fetch, and chasing my tail, and I find it funny when my human talks to me. I love going on walks where there aren't many people around to scare me. In fact, a backyard might be the perfect place for me! Sometimes I like to attack my leash because I forget what it's there for. When I get to go outside I'm so eager that I just want to take off running. Sometimes this means I'll pull on my leash, but if you ask me a few times to stop, then eventually I settle down and walk normally.

The cutest thing about me is the way my ears get bigger as I tilt my head when I know you're talking to me. My favorite past time is probably sleeping. I can sleep any and everywhere when my person is nearby.

Some things I need to work on is my separation anxiety. I try to be a brave boy, but I don't like to be left in rooms alone. While I don't like to bark, I will easily cry. If you leave me to cry for a while, usually I'll calm myself. But if you're leaving me alone too long then I can't help but start crying again. I try to be the bravest boy, but I do scare easily. If I'm scared I will run, shriek or cower when I don't know what to do. I am also very afraid of getting my toenails clipped and of taking baths. I don't mind getting my teeth brushed too much, but would much prefer to chew on a dental treat.

I think my perfect home will be a house with a fenced yard or an apartment with quick access to outside. I think I can learn to love multiple people at once if you give me time to know and trust you. But I would not be too crazy about humans under the age of 12 years. Young kids tend to be erratic and that can scare me. I am very playful and would love a brother or sister of the dog kind.

Smidget Rescue is not a shelter, and dogs cannot be seen at the Rescue location. All dogs are fostered throughout the Puget Sound area and are brought to the events where they can be met by prospective adopters. Additional pictures of adoptable dogs can be seen at: https://www.facebook.com/SmidgetRescue/photos_stream?tab=photos_albums. All adoptable dogs are spayed or neutered at 6 months of age or older, and always before being placed in their new homes. APPLICATIONS CAN BE OBTAINED BY EMAIL ONLY. Adoption process includes application, meet & greet, home visit and reference check. Email Jamie at smidgetrescue@hotmail.com or click on the CONTACT link on this page.
