Meet Duke
Duke is an amazing German Shepherd who’s about 4 years old and around 75 pounds. He’s very sweet, playful and doesn’t hardly bark at all. He’s great with older kids (9+) and guests in your home which is a big plus for a GSD! He’s a true sweetheart and extremely smart! In the time he’s been with us, Duke has learned over 20 voice commands and hand signals, made HUGE strides with impulse control and most impressive, he’s learned how to “dog”! (He initially didn’t know what to do with toys, bones or that he could eat ice cubes which are now his FAVORITE!) He’s such a good boy - he’s never chewed up shoes or anything he’s not supposed to have.
Since he was an outside dog for his life until joint rescue, he will need additional training. He is a powerful dog who doesn’t realize his strength, but extremely smart and willing to learn just about anything! He is food motivated and has learned to LOVE veggies for treats! While he gets along with the other dogs in his foster home, he can be reactive and push with new dogs. Since he was never properly socialized with other animals (having lived in a yard by himself for his first 4 years), he would do best with a female dog, or as an only dog. He is not a good match for cats.
Duke can be left alone occasionally for a couple of hours, but because he was abandoned outside before, he would do best in a home where someone is home often so he doesn’t ever have to feel that way again.
Duke was an owner surrender and lived his entire life outside - you’ll notice the tips of his ears are missing due to frostbite from being left outside in the freezing cold temps. Despite this, he is truly is an amazing dog and if you feel you have room in your heart and your house for this big teddy bear complete an application.
The first step in our adoption process to complete an application. We only adopt local to Chicagoland. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, vaccines, microchip, heartworm and fecal testing.
