Duke Retriever Mix Palatine, IL

Duke, a regal name befitting a stately canine. Our Duke, an approximately 2-year-old, 60-pound Retriever/Hound mix, would be better described as a silly, goofy guy. A perfect balance of playful and chill, Duke just wants to be by his humans, ready for any adventure.

Duke is housebroken which is great because he hates the crate. He has a bit of separation anxiety, so it will take him some time to stop looking for his humans when left alone. Eventually he will just lay on the couch and await his people's return. Treat motivation (except veggies…Duke does not consider veggies to be treats) helps this big boy learn quickly. He has already learned that he can reach the counter to help himself to treats and he has perfected puppy-dog-eyes for effective begging.

Among Duke’s many loves (besides food) are car rides (unbuckled), walks (he does well on a leash), playing fetch outside, jumping 6-foot chainlink fences, and self-entertaining with toys (although his preference is to play tug with his human or another dog).

Speaking of other dogs, Duke LOVES other dogs! He plays well with the foster's older resident dog so Duke sometimes is overly rambunctious, but he’s easily calmed down. He is friendly when meeting other pups and greets them nicely.
