Meet Dixie

Meet Dixie! This beautiful Treeing Walker Coonhound is about 50lbs and is right where she should be. At only a year old, she has already learned ‘sit’ and ‘lay down’ and is just crazy friendly to her doggy roommates!
Though she doesn’t currently live with cats, Dixie would probably be fine with the proper introductions. There were several kittens at the shelter and she seemed to be afraid of them. Dixie has several 4-legged roomies and LOVES playing! She tends to leave her much smaller housemates alone and gives all of the other dogs their space if they don’t want to play, so she’s proving to be able to pick up on cues and be respectful. Soft introductions to other dogs aren’t necessary and Dixie does very well at the dog park. When other pups aren't joining into the fun and she really, really wants them to, that's when you hear that bay howl!!
Confidence in this lady has been a continuous improvement and she’s come so far! Unless it’s bubble wrap, thunder, or fireworks, she’s a champ! Those three things still get her a little freaked out but most loud noises aren’t nearly as scary as they used to be. She just wants to be in her comfort zone, with her people.
Miss Dixie has never lived in a house before so it took some time for her to acclimate. She is now fully housebroken (except when it’s raining outside…) and the crate training has come along splendidly! No, she doesn't love going into it, but she knows she has to when it's time so she obeys. At night she gets the run of the house and usually picks the couch to sleep on, which works out really well for both teams. It’s when she knows that Foster Mom is still home and she can’t see her – that’s when she protests. But if Mom is cleaning and cooking and Dixie is in her crate to keep her out of the way, she does great!
As far as Dixie’s energy level is concerned, she seems to be an alert dog, sniffing around and chewing on toys. While she isn’t the pestering type, she definitely has energy and will need regular exercise and mental stimulation. Whether that be regular dog park trips or long walks, doesn’t matter to her! Please note that she can be a little spazzy… her long legs just go everywhere! So her coordination for being a running partner may or may not be successful… In fact, it’s too cute – when Dixie plays, her signature move is to duck under her playmate and stand up, leaving her buddy just hanging there! Dixie is great with kids, but again, she’s a spaz. So it's best if the child is old enough to stand his/her own ground.
If you’re looking for a lazy-morning pup who is sweet, affectionate, and energized during the day, Dixie is a great match. She loves other dogs and will just make your heart melt at how much she wants to be near you, especially when spooked by unknown sounds outside. Hurry and adopt Dixie today!

To ensure our dogs are placed in a safe environment, we require a home visit for all adoptions. Because of this, we typically only adopt to homes within 30 minutes of Athens, GA. If you are further away than that and are interested in one of our pups, please still fill out an application and we can discuss your options. Please understand that you would be responsible for all transportation - meeting the dog, picking the dog up to start a trial, returning the dog should he/she not be a good fit, etc. Please visit our website for more info.
