Meet Dexter

-Dexter is a 9 year old, standard poodle, who weighs 95#
-good with kids over 10 who are dog savy
-he is good with foster's cat
-he has to meet other dogs
-he is goofy, loving, and loyal.
- he will follow you EVERYWHERE
-he is on a special diet due to a sensitive stomach. He has been tested thoroughly to figure out why he has vomiting spells, but we have not been able to pinpoint what the cause is; sometimes he doesn't eat until you tell him it's ok. It's super inconsistent though as to when he does it; when his sensitive stomach is flaring he won't eat breakfast, but typically will come back to it in the afternoon.
- sometimes he forgets he has food and begs for you to feed him. Even if you show him he has food, he doesn't believe you, so either pretend to scoop more in or dump it back in the bin and refill the dish
- he drinks a LOT of water; he's also a very messy drinker.
- he will quietly go stand by the door when he has to go to the bathroom once he knows where to go for going outside.
- if he does that while licking his lips a lot he's going to throw up.
- he takes pills easily when hidden in food.
- we did not feed him people food much, but he will snatch food if given the chance. Especially pizza. He LOVES pizza.
- he does not like storms or fireworks, but does ok if given a trazadone.
- most of the time he is not a runner. He wants to be by his caregiver. He will take off after other animals
- he knows the commands sit, lay down, come, drop or drop it, eat, go potty, go.
-he typically needs to hear drop it 3-73 times before he complies.
-he loves to play fetch.
-we did allow him on furniture and the bed, but he will get down when asked.
-he does well left alone as long as there is no food or trash for him to get into.
-he does bark. At delivery people. At guests arriving. At neighbor dogs.
- he will jump when excited and he weighs 95lbs so that can be problematic.
-he does well in the car.
-he likes ear rubs, but no feet touching
-he finds sneezing highly offensive, but it's effective at getting him to move if he doesn't want to.
-he pulls BADLY when walking with a collar, he does well with a gentle leader, but keeps tension on it. He does best with a prong collar, no pulling or tension.
-he never goes potty while on a walk typically.

ADOPTION FEE: $300.00

Due to the recommendations about the coronavirus, we are not able to have group adoption events at PetSmart. We are, however, allowed to do individual adoptions so if you are interested in this pup/dog, please contact the foster listed above to set up a meeting. We look forward to continuing to save dogs with you and will resume group adoptions as soon as we can. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Our fosters do the best they can to provide all information about the animal's background and temperament while in foster care in their home. An adopters routine and home environment is likely going to be different than that in their foster home. Sometimes there is more that comes out about a dog's personality once they have been able to settle in a home & truly become comfortable. There are great articles out there written about the different stages a pet goes through after adoption; discussing transitions that happen at 3 days, 3 weeks, & 3 months. We highly recommend reading about this - it will help you understand the transition your new pet goes through.

Last Hope, Inc. is an all volunteer, foster based, no kill rescue! You can see almost all of our dogs on Saturdays from 11am - 3pm at Lakeville PetSmart (located by Hy-Vee just off 160th & Pilot Knob) & Burnsville Petsmart (located just off Hwy 35E & County Rd 42 by Chianti Grill).

Policies: You do not have to have a fence to adopt a dog from us, but some dogs will require a fence or acres to play, or an active family who will make sure the dog gets the exercise it needs to be happy. Some dogs do not have the temperament that will do well with young children.

The Adoption Fee is not enough to cover the vet bills. Sales tax of almost 7.25% is also included in the adoption fee that you see. Please consider donating to Last Hope to help us save these animals!

CAN YOU FOSTER? By taking a dog or puppies temporarily into your home and then coming to our adoption days to help find them homes, we can save more! If you’re interested, please email our office @ mail@last-hope.org and give us your contact information and what you would like to foster and someone will get back to you! You can also apply to be a foster home on our webpage! In the upper left hand corner there’s a drop down tab with the link for canine foster home. Just fill it out online & submit! We will get back to you as quick as we can.
