Meet Dapper Dan
Meet Dapper Dan - an adorably cute little 9-lb Shih Tzu with a sassy little strut to his stride. Dan wasn't always so cute, however. When he was found, his coat with dirty and matted down to the skin. He was also suffering from a skin infection. The rescue that took Dan in got him groomed and made sure he was treated for and recovered from his skin infection before transferring him to our shelter. This little fella is so sweet and loving. He just covers you in kisses and will bring you a toy in an invitation to play. Dan loves to curl up in a comfy, cozy bed and wouldn't mind at all being spoiled rotten. As cute as he is (and that's mighty darn cute), Dan still needs boundaries and limitations so that he doesn't develop a less than desirable attitude. Because his former owner didn't have Dan neutered, Dan's first inclination is to mark everything with his scent (THIS is mine, THIS is mine, THIS is mine - you get the picture). Neutering him will usually diminish if not totally eliminate this behavior but, until his adopter is confident that Dan is reliably house-trained, a belly band will help. Shih Tzus are goofy, gregarious and fun-loving dogs that are devoted to their people. Some, like Dan, however, are not always good around small children. Any children who live in or frequently visit his adopter's home, should be old enough (at least 12) to treat Dan gently and respectfully and be dog-savvy enough to read his cues when he doesn't want to be bothered. Even though he's a friendly little fella, he still has his moments and isn't beyond giving a growl or maybe even a nip if he feels he's being mishandled. We don't get Shih Tzus - especially ones as small as Dan - in very often, so make sure you submit an application soon if you are interested in him!
