Sitting toward the back of the kennel Daddy looks exactly what he is an overwhelmed senior wondering why his life has changed so and where his soft familiar bed is. When you stop and call gently to him he edges forward, head down making sure – you mean me? Once he sniffs your hand his turns his body to make as much contact as possible and his wagging tail makes his body sway on his stiff legs. Soon he will start to croon with the joy of being with a warm friendly person and frustration of the barrier between you. The words the handlers use to describe Daddy are gentle, calm, friendly and sometimes timid. With the handlers he walks beautifully on leash with no pulling and he knows sit and come. Long walks, a soft bed and lots of love and companionship are all Daddy hopes for – is that really too much to expect at this time of his life?
