Little Chico was found in a home in rural New Mexico after his owner, an Air Force veteran, passed away suddenly. The police were called when the owner did not respond to a check-in call. When they arrived, they found Chico along with 12 cats living in pretty rough conditions. They kindly put out a large bowl of cat food and left them there until help could arrive 2 days later. No one in the immediate family wanted him or the cats. Chico came to Albuquerque with Jan Marino and then to NMAF, and the 12 cats went to Felines & Friends in Santa Fe. Little Chico was nearly feral when he arrived, his nails so overgrown, infection was present. Dr Martin and staff at VCA-Wyoming took care and patience to get him up-to-date on vaccinations, trimmed his nails, and got him on antibiotics. Now in foster care, he is coming out of his shell, though is struggling a bit understanding life with other dogs, not cats, which is all he has known up til now. He thinks he is a cat, preferring to sleep on the back of the couch. He has some medical needs that NMAF is committed to taking care of - a dental is needed and some evaluation diagnostics to look at a heart murmur, found during his recent exam. He also has a condition called Canine Hyperkeratosis, which is a skin condition in which excess keratin is produced, in particular on the nose and/or paw pads, causing skin thickening and hardening. In Chico’s case, it is on his nose, creating a raised crusty patch. We are using Snout Soother, a topical moisturizer for now until further evaluation can be done with his vet. Chico would love to have a quiet life, perhaps with another retired veteran and a kitty or two, similar to his former life. He is a sweet little guy who has been through a lot but still has life and love to give.

If you are interested in meeting Chico, please complete an application found at www.nmaf.org/adopt/adoption-application and send it to the person listed above. There is no commitment or guarantee for adoption but allows for screening before setting up a meet & greet with his foster family.

Chico's medical needs are going to be quite expensive. If you would like to donate to his care, NMAF would greatly appreciate it! You can donate through our website at www.nmaf.org/donate or by mail. Any donations will go exclusively to Chico's needs.

Because home visits are required, NMAF dogs cannot be adopted out of the greater Albuquerque / Santa Fe area.

Adoption Clinic Location: PetSmart - Academy & Wyoming, Saturdays, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. - Currently Suspended
