Meet Chewey and Charlie - Fostered in Topeka

Charlie and Chewey are a bonded pair of brothers, born 03 Feb 2019 and are UKC registered. They are typical tri-color saddle back Beagles. They came from a breeder that fell ill and had to give up all their animals. I know that including us, they have been through five different homes. The last owner wanted them gone and was going to put them down if nobody took them. They have lived in pens and cages their entire life and their faces and ears bear many battle scars, however they are gentle and crave human attention.

Charlie is the more dominant of the two, he is easiest to identify as he has a pure white face. He is always in the lead. He is the first to greet and the most affectionate. He tries to be a lap dog if you let him and when it is bed or nap time, he wants to sleep with his head near mine. Charlie does like to fetch balls and will return them and drop them at your feet.

Chewey is more submissive, he is always second to greet. As soon as Charlie is standing with his paws on your waist, Chewey comes up on Charlie's back hugging him wanting your attention as well. While submissive, he stands his ground when Charlie invades his space. They will growl at each other to make their feelings known but has never led to biting or fighting. A simple Hey stops it. Chewey is the faster learner but is also the most cautious. If you are aggressive with your voice, he will roll on his back.

These dogs have never lived indoors, so the house is the same as the pen in which they have lived, and potty training has been a challenge. They will go when outside but will also mark in the house if the mood strikes. They know very few voice commands or choose not to participate; this can be a challenge when it is time to go outside and can sometimes end up in a herding contest. If all the other dogs are wanting out, then they follow the pack. A good obedience course would do them well.

They rarely bark in the house but outside, they can get vocal especially when squirrels or rabbits are passing by or they are playing. They will crate all night long but getting in the crate can be an experience. Chewey has recently learned to get in the cage for his night treat on his own but Charlie still needs some coaxing and sometimes some pushing involved but once in, they settle down.

These two are tightly bonded, when separated for more than a few minutes begin to look for each other and if they can't find the other, get very anxious. They were recently neutered, given all their shots and chipped. Because of their past and how tightly bonded they are, they are being put up for adoption as a pair.

If interested in adoption please fill out the application at www.bassetandbeagle.org. Adoption fee is $450 for both.
