CODE RED 5/24, 4 pm deadline and EUTH LISTED-LOS ANGELES, CA (LOS ANGELES ANIMAL SERVICES/NORTH CENTRAL SHELTER)- ADORABLE BUT NEGLECTED 3 YR, 46 lb CHOW “ CHEF BOYARDEE”- ID #A2192791 - TAKES TREATS GENTLY, is CALM- NEEDS GOOD HOME, FOSTER OR RESCUE ASAP.
Help! The North Central Los Angeles shelter Just sent out a notice notifying us this boy is now in Saturday’s 5/24, 4 pm deadline, or he will be euthanized. This poor boy was sadly found as a dumped stray on 4/17 missing much of his fur due to utter neglect and fleas.
Now fondly named Chef Boyardee by the shelter, he has treatable alopecia from fleas and is now on medication, with notes his skin is already improving. Not surprisingly, he was initially afraid to be handled and vaccinated, but since then, warmed up, was vaccinated, and was noted as gently taking treats. The last few days on notes also state he appears “calm”.
Additional and earlier shelter notes state, “He was able to go out to the yard with a volunteer friend that reports that he really liked cheese snacks & was gentle while taking them. Passing through kennels he was calm & walked well past other dogs.” They further added he, “Initially he didn`t come when I called and when I approached he whined and went in the opposite direction of me. After about 15 minutes of leaving him alone, I crouched down and showed him some high value treats. Over time he started coming closer to me doing, doing drive by`s. Eventually he came right up and took cheese - but not meat treats - from me and stayed there licking my hand. From then on, when I would call his name he would run over to me. Seemed to prefer me being in a seated or crouched position to standing. Soft mouth when taking treats. Could not get him to sit. Lapped before leaving yard and he was much more attentive to me. Non reactive around barking dogs when returning. We passed 3 different size / breed dogs in the lobby and he did not react or seem interested in any of them. Used a clip when returning him to his kennel, he went right in.“
In his playgroup assessment with other dogs, it states, “ No Play, Tolerant, Kept to self, Low Energy, steerable”
Will you please consider to give Chef Boyardee a chance to live? He needs an adopter or foster and rescue to step up asap. This particular shelter sadly euthanized the last purebred chow there saying he could not be handled when he simply looked scared, and gave little warning. We want to make sure Chef Boyardee does not meet this same fate.
The shelter gave us many videos on these links to show the the potential of this dog:
