Charlie's Story

8 year old Charlie (Nov 20, 2017), lived in a home with 8 dogs. Her owner has dementia and over the past few years, Charlie and the others suffered from horrible neglect. They mostly spent 24/7 crated with pee pads with an adult son coming in to feed/change pee pads.

She may have been breeding these dogs. The history is a bit spotted and unclear.

Charlie was surrendered to the Quebec shelter by the son, when bylaw became involved. She arrived with horribly long nails, dried ear and eye secretions, a coat that was horribly matted with dried feces and urine caked in. While the shelter was bathing her, a tooth fell out. She had a laceration on her paw. And she circled constantly.

The shelter did an amazing job cleaning up Charlie and helping her begin her healing journey.

Due to the extreme cost of bringing them up to date medically, the shelter requested a transfer to rescue, so they joined Mattie's Place.

We're told Charlie is 8 years old by the owner's son, so we assigned her date of birth. She weighs in at 3.5 pounds. She has had all her medical brought up to date, including a dental with teeth extractions. She is healthy and ready for adoption.

She will need multiple grooms to get her nails back to an acceptable length and her coat glistening white again, but that will come in time as her past fades away and her bright future becomes the norm.

Charlie does circle. Our veterinarian does not believe she has neurological deficits but does believe it's a coping mechanism from being crated for years with little to no care. She is showing improvement in foster care vs. the time spent at the shelter, so we're truly hoping & expecting in the months to come the circling becomes less and less with the compassion and kindness of her adopter, helping her through.

Though Charlie had a really challenging life, she holds no human grudges and is the sweetest little girl. Some fearful hesitation with meeting new people, but it doesn't take her long to be accepting of new friends.

Charlie is so tiny, that she'll do best in a home without small children, under 9 years old. She can be a solo dog or be in a home with a resident dog, but, due to her tiny size, no dogs over 10 pounds for her safety. She will also do best with someone home more often than not as she is exhibiting separation anxiety when being left alone. She really loves her people and I feel her heart would be happiest having some human companionship mostly instead of waiting on her people to come home after 8,9,10 hour workdays. Due to the separation anxiety, a home without shared walls is best as everyone has to leave at some point. Though her barks are tiny as she's only 3.5 pounds, the barks can still be heard by a neighbour if they're really listening in.

Like most small dogs, Lili is not the biggest fan of winter and along with her crated life, potty accidents inside can happen but she's really do her best to please her foster parents and potty outside.

Charlie is looking for a patient and loving adopter that will help her leave her past behind and embrace her future with an abundance of kindness. Is that you?

FROM THE FOSTER:

Charlie is a sweet and loving little dog. She’s vocal, so she’ll bark when someone enters the home, but only until she realizes there’s no threat. She’s friendly and gets along with everyone she meets.

Charlie enjoys her daily walks. One short stroll in the early morning and a longer one in the evening. Because she gets cold easily and is tiny, most of her walks are indoors in uncrowded spaces.

Charlie circles often, but she’s making great progress from walking on leash. She walks straight and stays in a loose leash position right by my side.

After a walk, Charlie loves to curl up in her bed and relax. The only thing that gets her up? The sound of someone in the kitchen as she knows that’s where the treats are.

Charlie adores belly rubs. She’ll come find you, then dash back to her bed and roll over, ready for a belly rub.

Charlie does her business outside most of the time but also uses pee pads indoors. She’s had a couple of accidents on the floor in the last week, but she’s house trained for the most part.

Charlie doesn’t like being left alone. She was left alone once and she barked continuously for 30 minutes until we returned home. She’s more comfortable with someone around.

Charlie is the sweetest, most adorable dog. She’s trusting and affectionate, and fostering her has been a pleasure!

------------------------------------

ADOPTION FEE INCLUDES: spay/neuter, deworming, flea/tick prevention, vaccinations, dentals if needed or any added surgical needed surgical care, food, nose to tail health exam, toys, leash|collar, winter coat (seasonal), poop bags, dishes and 30 days of Trupanion pet insurance with immediate coverage on adoption day for any illness or injury not pre-existing.

----------------------------------------

To note: the above description is relevant to this dog in it's current & previous setting. Home changes & adopter personalities can bring out different behaviours not previously seen.
