Canelo Border Collie & Carolina Dog Mix Lenoir, NC

Canelo was being kept by his surrendering owner in an outdoor corral with their pack. They have too many dogs, so made the difficult decision to rehome some.

Canelo has been in his foster home since Aug. 2021 and his foster mom loves him. He's quiet and sweet, contrasting very well with the 6-month old pups she's trying to house-train. He can be left uncrated at night, but is confined to the kitchen with the other fosters.

With a guesstimated birthday in Aug. 2020, Canelo weighs about 40 lb. He's leash-savvy and is a wonderful walking companion. He's comfy in a 42" crate so he can sprawl, and his foster hasn't noticed any chewing of unauthorized items. Of course with those puppies around, any chewing gets blamed on them!

Canelo is house-trained when kept on a regular schedule, currently every 3 hours. He ignores the cats in his foster home, although the one night he got to sleep with his foster mom he made it known he didn't want the cats on the bed.

Canelo is nervous in cars, but loves to be with his people. He's learning to tolerate car rides in order to go on adventures.

April 2020: We are not holding public adoption events until further notice. Qualified families are being invited to appointments to meet specific dogs. There are currently no opportunities to view multiple dogs and adoption events aren't being held at Tractor Supply in Lenoir.

Whether dogs / puppies come in as strays or owner surrenders, we usually have to make our best guess as to birthdate and breed.

If adopted into a home with other animals, particularly cats, your new pet should be crated or secured when you're not available to supervise to insure a harmonious relationship.

A vet reference is required to confirm responsible pet ownership. Requirement is a minimum three year vet history documenting current / previous pets are spayed / neutered, kept up to date on core vaccinations, and on heartworm prevention. We suggest first time pet owners without a vet history look for an adult dog for companionship and to gain experience. Other rescues or your local government-run animal control agency may have different adoption requirements.

Adoption fee covers two vaccinations plus spay / neuter if using our local low-cost spay/neuter clinic (overnight stay required) and surgery occurs as agreed upon in the adoption contract. Convenience fee equal to refundable spay/neuter deposit may be required if, using our veterinarian or same-day surgery, service is scheduled through our organization. Additional fees for 3rd puppy vaccination, refundable spay/neuter deposit, etc. may apply.

We are an all-volunteer, foster-based rescue. We receive no funding from agencies. Available animals can be seen most Saturdays at Tractor Supply in Lenoir from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. We recommend interested parties contact us to pre-qualify for adoption so their new furry family can go home once paperwork is complete.
