Calipso's Story

Why Choose Me?
Foster update: Hi! I wanted to post an update on Calipso. She has been doing so amazing in a foster home. She is crate trained and potty trained. She loves meeting new people. She is good with other dogs, usually keeping to herself. She has become less aggressive towards food and can how sit and stay before being released to eat meals. She has also learned to give paw before getting treats and takes them gently from our hands. She loves curling up on a blanket or laying in a sun spot around the house. Calipso walks well on a leash and loves to sniff around. She loves head scratches and belly rubs. Overall, we have loved our time fostering Calipso. If you know anyone interested in adopting please reach out!! We would love to see this sweet girl find her forever home.

Update from Calipso's advocate:

I am advocating for Calipso!

This sweet girl got to the shelter at the end of July, and she is not enjoying the shelter environment. She is 6 years old, so she has a great temperament and is medium energy. Calipso is also only 46 pounds, so she could do well in an apartment or house!

Her former owner said that she is great with kids, dogs, and CATS, however, she does not like being bothered by other pets when she is eating. She is also house trained and crate trained!

She enjoyed a lot of playtime today and made sure to stop by me for hugs and to hang out in my lap. She was able to entertain herself with a chew toy and occasionally would bring it to my feet so I could throw it for her. We also had a nice interaction through the fence with a male dog named Bus! After we played for a bit she sat down with me and gave kisses in exchange for pets.

This girl could do great in any household and I hope she finds her forever home soon! She is full of love and a lot of fun!

Update: I remember Calipso. When she was at the shelter a year ago, she was missing patches of fur and looked like she'd recently had puppies. She was also the sweetest girl and liked lounging in the pool. She's still super sweet, and her coat now looks great! She wasn't interested in the pool today, but she loved playing fetch. After playtime, Calipso enjoyed being petted and maneuvered half her body on my lap. She's affectionate and also smart. She comes when called and knows how to sit and lie down for treats. Her former owner said Calipso is house trained, crate trained, and good with kids (she was around children ages 5 - 12). She's also good with other dogs as long as food isn't around. She's protective of her food and needs to be fed her meals or given treats away from other dogs. I hope Calipso can find a home where that's not a problem. She really is a sweetie.
* * *
I'm always amazed at how a dog who obviously hasn't had the best life can come to the shelter and still be all sweetness and joy. That's Calipso. She's missing fur on her back and tail and was probably used for breeding, but she still wants to be with people and is so happy to have a friend. Calipso loves treats, but she also loves pets and praise and wants to please. It was a hot day, and I tried to get Calipso into the pool to cool off. She put one paw in and quickly pulled it out like she wasn't sure about that at all. I bribed her with treats, but no, she wasn't haven't it. I walked away to put my camera up, and when I turned around, she was lounging in the pool very pleased with herself. I couldn't help but smile. The person that found Calipso said she's great with children (she was around kids ages 5 - 17), other dogs, and cats. She's also crate trained. She was, however, very protective of her food. I found Calipso to be a sweetheart and hope she has a chance to have a better life with a loving family.
You can read more about this dog and check out additional photos here: https://www.accgov.com/9482/Dogs

The adoption fees, shelter schedule, a description of the rescue and adoption process, and a list of included vetting can be found at https://athenspets.net/adoption-rescue-process.

This dog is available for adoption through Athens-Clarke County Animal Services, located at 125 Buddy Christian Way, Athens, GA.
