Meet Cabo

Bio updated 10/4/25...

Please meet Cabo. He is a neutered 9-month-old, sealed Boxer, up to date on vaccinations, has a full natural tail, and he’s being fostered in Scappoose, OR.

Cabo had a less-than-ideal start in life, as a pup confiscated along with his mom and littermates when he was just about 2 months old. Then he was held by the court until finally being released to MLBR following a trial. So, until he arrived at his foster home, Cabo had spent his entire life kenneled and becoming strongly bonded with his brother, who was fostered with him. He loves other dogs and is safe to live with and be around cats.

Cabo has proven to be a very sweet boy. And while his foster dad admits to being much better at socialization than training, Cabo is no longer the frightened pup he was when he arrived.

It's important that gentle correction is the rule for training this boy, to avoid him shutting down and becoming fearful. Housebreaking was a challenge for a pup that spent 5 months being kenneled, but as long as he is able to take himself in and out, he does well now. He responds appropriately now even to stern vocal correction, which doesn’t frighten him anymore. He knows the commands “sit”, “come”, “crate”, and understands the word “out” (reluctantly though if he’s in the kitchen). Staying on-leash for training is recommended for the moment or he might simply walk away or want to play. Cabo will benefit greatly from a good puppy class as soon as possible.

Everything is still very new to Cabo, even simple human interaction. His common response is avoidance, but that becomes less automatic as more time goes by. Because of his apparent unease with people, he is not the typical Boxer pup eager to jump in your lap; but he has shown he's a very sweet boy that will become a wonderful dog for some lucky adopters, once he knows he is safe and loved.

His foster dad reports that Cabo has bonded with him, will follow him, and especially his personal dogs, and cuddles up on the sofa with him now, but that took a lot of focused affection and encouragement.

Because of that constant bond with his brother (who has been adopted) and his foster dad’s dogs, he is unhappy sleeping alone but still crates well. If allowed in his human’s bed, he's like a happy 4-month-old and will eagerly snuggle up. He will certainly respond best with another dog to bond with and learn from in his forever home.

His foster dad says, “This pup is so very easy to love and I will miss him. He’ll be a wonderful addition to an attentive and loving home.” If you think Cabo would be a good fit for you, please send in an application today – www.mustluvboxersrescue.com/adopt.
