Dachshunds are particularly susceptible to problems with their backs, and even though he is not 100% doxie, our Bruno became 100% paralyzed in his hind quarters. He ended up in our care with big bad sores on his rear legs from dragging them, and a very sore scrotum! Plus a stinky infected mouth. Poor guy couldn't even go potty by himself. Medicine, dressings and wraps, dental care...soon he was ready for a neuter. Along the way he had been receiving laser treatments on his spine. He regained control of his bladder and bowels, but still could not wiggle his toes. He's such a friendly, happy little guy, it was disheartening to watch him drag himself around. But we kept up with the laser treatments and the hated swimming exercises, until one day he could stand up tall on his own, and finally he could walk! Now he runs, goes up and down very shallow steps , and plays like a puppy with his foster buddies! Bruno is a classic black and tan marked Dachshund crossed with something a tad bigger. He has a bouncy, fun, loving personality. He should go to a home with family that will be willing to take a little extra care with him, such as no jumping up onto things or down either (ramps, stairs in front of couches etc) and keep up his exercise regimen (swimming or just walking and running on level ground). Bruno is on no medication at this time except monthly heartworm, flea and tick control.
