Bruce's Story

**Seeking a committed, hands-on, confident, and active individual. **** Adoption Fee sponsored for the right home.** Not for guardianship or to live outdoors. He is accustomed to indoor living with a comfort room, control of temperature, and a dog bed under his human's feet. Patience, understanding of the breed, and stranger danger reactivity are important factors to understand.

Meet Bruce. 4.5- 5-year-old beautiful GSD. Bruce has been with the Rescue Sanctuary for 4-plus years. He is everything his breed brings. Must be experienced, dedicated, and devoted.

He was a project dog rescued by a good soul, then COVID hit, and Bruce's best chance at a good home disappeared.

His human lost his life after a routine surgery came down with COVID during his rehab stay, and he did not make it.

Bruce was surrendered after his elderly owner died. Who purchased him from an irresponsible breeder? That's when Kevin rescued him. I say this with the utmost respect. The breeder is a POS for selling such breeds to extremely elderly people. Bruce was never socialised, exercised, or received much training. As the only dog with 0 efforts toward any development, socialisation, or training, his mental health deteriorated, developing severe anxiety and fear reactivity. When all of the above are fundamental strides that should be met within the first year. Fast forward to now.

Bruce is amazing and does take patience to gain his trust. He does warm up quickly but does so at his own pace and time. Respecting his space is crucial to gaining his trust.

Bruce is every dog of all sizes and ages and is friendly. He requires a stable balance pack to follow off and learn from. Bruce's anxiety spikes when he is not with another dog. Bruce's ability to accept and trust new people is possible and truly comes easily. We have witnessed him do so plenty of times with 0 concerns once he does. Even with children. But it's a process, and safety is of importance, which is why an experienced breed owner is required. A person willing to listen to learn and NOT set Bruce up to fail. There's no room for fuck ups, nor do I care to entertain anyone who doesn't have a respectful understanding of his breed and his needs. 0 human error that will lead to failure.

Bruce has become amazingly perfect. Sadly, this was not the case before he landed in our care. With 0 chance from the moment he was born. The breeder failed him and only cared about the $$$ made. Not a responsible or ethical breeder at all. Nor caring to place him responsibly. For 2 years, Bruce lived isolated in a chain or a garage. Of course, he developed behaviours.

Bruce is dismissed as the little lost little brother who always wants to fit in with the pack. He goes with the flow. He enjoys learning. It comes easily for him. He loves group play. Bruce loves car rides, fast-paced running, but even simple walks are great. Bruce loves hiking and trails. Running the treadmill is always fun. Running by the bike is something he too enjoys. Swimming, boat rides, canoeing, we have done it all. We continue to expose him to eliminate doubt and build confidence. He takes guidance and correction with acceptance and grace. In the right hands, he would have been perfect. Bruce is sweet, nurturing, gentle, and curious. Protective because it's what his genetics tell him to do. But with a person who takes leadership and charge, he follows proudly. Bruce loves everyone he trusts. He is extremely smart, social, and respectful of all animals. A confident, experienced, active, hands-on person who will continue to push Bruce to explore and accept learning while practicing safety is best. With positive reinforcement training and disciplined correction within a structured environment. He will thrive and continue to learn trust. Routine and fun are possible if self-discipline and a controlled environment are in place. All this means is Bruce needs a GSD-savvy and confident owner who will safely continue to help him thrive without compromising his safety or allowing him to fail due to human error.

Bruce is house and crate-trained. His off-leash recall is excellent, but continued work and training are a lifetime commitment. Bruce walks well on a leash but the initial excitement gets the best of him. Nothing that cannot be managed and improved through repetition and continued training. With a bit more dedication and training efforts, perfection can be achieved. A fenced-in yard is required. Bruce enjoys simple daily walks as much as any outdoor exploration adventure. He desires to be with his human.

All Adoptions Include:
• Spayed/Neutered
• Rabies Vaccination: 1 or 3 years.
• All Appropriate Core Vaccinations, Including Lepto & Corona. 1 or 3 years.
• Heartworm tested Negative.
•Receive monthly Heartworm, Flea, and Tick Prevention.
• Lyme Disease Tested Negative.
• Dewormed and Fecal tested Negative.
• All testing completed within 6 -12 months.
•All age-appropriate needs (blood work, dental, testing, and meds)
• Lifetime Microchip Registration includes free unlimited updates.
•Feed a quality protein diet

Adoption Processing:
•Adoption application review can take up to 3 weeks.
• A minimum of 2 Meet & Greets are required before adopting.
•A home check needs to take place.
• Out-of-state adopters are welcome at the adopter's expense.
• We DO NOT ship any of our adoptable pets.
• Adoption fees are paid at the time of adoption
•No exchange or request for money is required before adoption.
•No payment plans.

AHRS Former Adopter:
• No adoption fee is required; a donation of choice is expected, encouraged, welcome, and appreciated.

Training is an ongoing process that needs to be worked on daily.
