April, 2020 Foster Notes:
"Brewster is a really good boy. He is so loving and loyal to his "pack of people. He will be protective over them, and does so out of love. He's the biggest softie with his pack of his trusted companions. He knows sit, stay, paw, down, come, and is very good at waiting and very good at listening. He is very good on the leash. He is house trained and will let you know if he ever has to go out, which is a few times per day. He was very good about being on our wake / sleep schedule and sleeps soundly through the night. He loves a good walk / hike / run and can do 5-6+ miles or more every day. He is a beautiful dog - you will hear hundreds of comments on how handsome he is. He is German Shepherd mix with potential Malamute or Akita in him, we think. Beautiful, thick and soft fur which requires some daily brushing / de-shedding. When home, he's loves to sleep, rest and get some scratches and love. He's very sweet and loves to love and give kisses but he's not demanding of your attention. He's very quiet and rarely vocalizes at all at home. He does not beg for food, though he will never turn down a little piece of cheese or little piece of hot dog as a treat. He does need a home where he won't be around many "strangers because he wants to protect his house and his people as part of his nature. His learned behavior has been to protect and has bitten before and has a tendency to lunge and bark loudly at strange dogs / people / joggers on the leash so you will have to be very mindful of putting him in positions where he may feel the need to protect. After biting, he and the one he bit did umbilical training and built up great trust between the two - he is very smart and learns quickly and is open to accept another alpha male. He would be happiest in a rural setting with a yard to roam and with a steady number of companions in his pack that he recognizes. If he is going to be with other dogs or people regularly, he should be introduced to them carefully and he may need professional aggression training.
Brewster is a very good boy and would be a loving, loyal companion to someone who can give him the right home for him. He deserves all the love and he will show it all back.
* FOSTER NOTES *
Brewster is very smart. Training him in basic obedience was pretty easy but, as with all dogs, it takes constant reinforcement. He know sit, down, stay, heel and come. He knows to sit when I stop walking.
When we're home, he's a complete couch potato, happy to sleep on his bed. He chooses to sleep in his crate rather than in bed with me. He loves running and activity but does not like being left alone so would be good in a home where you work from home or have someone around usually.
He loves playing with other dogs, particularly when they're off leash. He also is friendly toward dogs when they both are on leash provided the other dog is friendly. This is true in matter the size of the other dog.
He isn't very food motivated. When training him, I resorted to using cut up pieces of hotdogs. Usually I feed him a combination of wet and dry food, which he sometimes ignores for hours.
When it's just the two us or someone that Brewster knows well, he's a sweet dog. He doesn't like strangers so would do better in a home without a lot of guests coming and going. He also guards his bed so will need breed-savvy folks to be patient with him. No kids in the home as he can be mouthy but he is very receptive to correction. Sweet loving guy ready for training and his forever home!!
Thank you for considering adoption of a Milo Foundation Sanctuary dog. Our Sanctuary is where our rescued dogs who have had difficulty in a home in the past, have behavioral issues, or too much energy, or for some, aggression issues with other dogs, or intense stranger danger that make them more difficult to safely and happily live in urban environments. These are not beginner dogs or for the most part nor are they for families with children. IF you are looking for an easy dog to add to your family, we suggest looking at the dogs at our Adoption Center, Milo Pt Richmond. BUT, if you can offer a safe and nurturing home to a dog with some behavioral "quirks" please do send an application today. Thank you.
