APPLICANTS: IF YOU DO NOT MEET THE REQUIREMENTS THEN YOU WILL NOT GET A RESPONSE. We will be flooded with applicants and very few will meet this dog’s needs. Be ready to provide proof that you meet all of the requirements listed here. LOCAL ADOPTION ONLY IN THE LOUISVILLE/SOUTHERN INDIANA AREA!!
Bret is a 1.5 yr old “parti-color” Schnauzer that weighs around 16 lbs. He’s extremely smart, funny, and a cuddle bug. Unfortunately he was not socialized properly so he is anxious over new people, kids, and dogs. He is reactive and knows to protect himself when he’s scared. His surrender form said he would potty in the house, and we feel that was because he felt anxious. We set him up with a crate and he retreats into it when he’s overwhelmed, it is his safe space where he can recharge (he is perfectly crate trained - he loves it in there). He does well on walks, does great in a car, and loves to play with toys and our ambassador dog, Loretta (he had a small female dog in his previous home that he adored. He will need a similar housemate dog with the same low-key temperament that won’t challenge him but engage him for fun/not dominance.)
ADOPTION REQUIREMENTS:
- Solid structure fence (preferably a privacy fence)
- Large, private yard for him to run in
- Just one female dog in the home who is low-key but playful that’s around his size. This female dog must be trained and does not resource guard. We will assess her before Bret’s placement.
- Adopter MUST use a crate. This dog needs it for his sanity.
- No kids, no grandkids, crate when visitors are over unless working with him on leash with indirect socialization
- MUST be groomed every 6 weeks. Must be brushed regularly.
- Adopter will be required to take him through obedience class and learn how he thinks. This is critical for all dogs but most definitely for Bret. Watching how he reacts in class will tell you what triggers him and how to work him through it.
Bret is loaded with personality and human-smart. To transfer him to his adopter’s home will take multiple visits (it took him a week to get used to my husband without giving him a side-eye). This is one of those tough dogs to place and we need a very understanding adopter who is willing to center their world around their dogs and do what it takes to bring this rockstar into their home.
If he’s still posted, he’s still available. If you feel you meet every one of these requirements, first fill out an online application via our website. Answer every question with honesty. If you fit his requirements, you’ll hear from us.
