Meet Bowie

Meet Bowie, finally released from the Chain Gang and ready to find a home that understands and loves him.

Bowies ideal family is one who can welcome him with patience, routine, and consistency in schedule. They should have knowledge about the breed. Bowie is NOT a starter dog. He requires a skilled, patient handler.

Bowie is a protective dog, but also playful and happy. He loves long walks and car rides, so he needs a family who can help him get plenty of exercise. Because Bowie has had a lot of humans let him down, his trust must be earned through multiple visits and interactions. Bowie is living in Rhode Island with his foster mom. She will help new adopters meet Bowie and see him in his environment now. She will help set up Bowies new family for success.

Bowie, is a two year old American bulldog weighing in at 60 pounds. Bowie spent his early years in Memphis Tennessee where he was shackled to a tree by a 30 pound chain with a lock around his neck. This is torture for animals, and it is far too common in some areas of the country.

Bowie can probably never be startled or teased. He has made lots of progress, but he isnt completely comfortable with a lot of things. Clear direction, a kind voice and TREATS help him know what you want from him.

Bowie is fully vetted and has worked with a fantastic trainer and been evaluated by a veterinarian behaviorist who, along with his foster family, have worked intensely with this big boy to get him ready for a home of his own. Continued training will be essential to keep him moving forward. He would do best with professional training in his new home.

Bowie is a strong 60 pound boy! He gets along with lots of people, but we think he would best thrive in a home with teenagers at the youngest. Most, he needs a committed family who understands what he needs and has the patience to work with him every day.

The biggest challenge to having this boy in your home is that he wants to eat alone and not share - having children (toddlers especially) and other dogs is not possibly with his resource guarding - if you let him eat alone, he's got no beef with anyone!! This is a common symptom in dogs who have been chained up for their entire lives - they have never had enough food or water and it's not something they unlearn quickly, if ever.

Most of all, Bowie needs routine and consistency. A home with a wildly varying schedule and lots of unexpected happenings will slow down Bowies progress.

He requires a fenced yard, so he can have freedom to run, play, and do dog things without being tied up ever again. He will develop confidence and trust at his own pace. This may take longer than it would take with another dog.

Yes, Bowie is a little more difficult than many of our other dogs, but we believe that, to the right adopter, the hard is what will make the reward infinitely better.
