Blue's Story

Blue joins Mattie's Place via a Canadian shelter, when a backyard breeder was closing their business.

At her spay, she weighed in at 14 pounds and her breeder says she's 9 years old with a given DOB: Nov 7, 2016. At her spay she also had a good dental cleaning and had a few needed teeth removed, some that were fractured and painful.

We ran full blood work on her and all was clear. We also ran a fecal and though it showed she had antigens for hookworm and whipworm, it had to have been treated just prior to the breeder releasing her as there were no parasites left just antigen (the residuals from the body trying to fight off the parasites)

Blue is a very sweet dog. A little shy and nervous and still working through life outside of the barn she lived her life in, but she friendly and craves love from the humans she's sharing her life with.

We originally sent Blue to hang out for a couple weeks with our trainer as the breeder said Blue was not good with other dogs but that was debunked as she passed with flying colours being social with all sorts of canines. That said, Blue is a dog that has missed out on love that she wanted so badly in her lifetime, she would likely do best as a solo dog in the home to get all the lovin' to herself but can have lots of visiting or neighbourhood dogs friends as needed. But if the perfect adopter has another dog, I'm not going to deny that adoption option.

Blue would do best with someone home most often. She doesn't exhibit separation anxiety, but again, given she's soaking in all the human attention, that would make her heart happiest; having a human pal to spend her days with.

Blue is a dog that will require daily grooming and regular professional grooms, so be sure when you're considering adoption that is factored in to your budget - presumably $150 every couple months.

Blue has some very mild "resource guarding" with other dogs, with high value toys - - like squeaky toys. This is a dog that never had a toy in her life, so the discovery of toys has made her heart soar. She's not a fight or bite risk to other dogs, but she will warn other dogs to step back when she's playing if they try to join in. She likes to party with her toy, solo!

She hasn't been cat tested, but I can't see her having an issue with a dog savvy cat.

Blue is just a really nice dog needing a really amazing adopter to give her many years of dedication to make up for her 1st difficult 9 years of life.

FROM THE FOSTER:

Blue is a sweet, quiet girl who craves being close to her people. She’s good with both men and women, but can be timid at first and will often cower when being picked up or having a leash put on her. Despite this, she warms up quickly and is happy to cuddle up on the couch or follow you around the house looking for attention.

Blue is a fair weather girl and is not a fan of going outside on cold, wet days, although she’s still good about doing her business outside when taken out, she just tends to resist walks and let outs on these days. She has come a long way with her leash walking skills and will trot along quite nicely behind you.

While on walks, she often thinks squirrels and other dogs are exciting, but doesn’t show any reactivity and will continue past them with some convincing. She’s been on a couple hikes and shows surprising confidence in each new environment.

Blue gets along fine with other dogs, big and small. She is quite indifferent to small dogs, but tends to seek out comfort in the bigger dogs by cuddling up to them when she’s feeling anxious. Although she’s not rude or pushy with other dogs, she has an obvious lack of awareness for their body language and social cues and should be monitored to make sure she’s not missing any ā€œgive me spaceā€ cues from other dogs.

Blue loves squeaky toys and she loves her food. She recently started grasping the concept of taking treats from my hand. I think once this clicks for her, she will be very easy to train and motivate using food.

When she has one of her favourite squeaky toys she will communicate to the other dogs that it is not theirs to take. She is not over the top about it, just clear communication that that toy is hers if a dog gets too in her face while she has it.

She has no issue with people handling her toys.

Blue is quiet and clean in her crate and is accustomed to sleeping in it over night as well as when no one is home. She would appreciate a cozy bed in her crate to cuddle up in.

------------------------------------

ADOPTION FEE INCLUDES: spay/neuter, deworming, flea/tick prevention, vaccinations, dentals if needed or any added surgical needed surgical care, food, nose to tail health exam, toys, leash|collar, winter coat (seasonal), poop bags, dishes and 30 days of Trupanion pet insurance with immediate coverage on adoption day for any illness or injury not pre-existing.

----------------------------------------

To note: the above description is relevant to this dog in it's current & previous setting. Home changes & adopter personalities can bring out different behaviours not previously seen.
