Meet Bernie
This calm, easy going, giant is Bernie, a male Smooth Coated St. Bernard. Bernie weighs about 130 and with an estimated DOB of 7/2017 he still has some growing to do. Gentle, as we said, and patient, Bernie is friendly and outgoing, he loves people and likes to play, but he can be stubborn. A St. Bernard's stubbornness requires an equally calm and patient hand; rough handling and force can ruin a wonderfully lovable dog. Bernie is loyal and bonds easily, he responds well to affection, praise, and rewards. St. Bernards are very intelligent, which is why they do well in obedience and tracking work. A St. Bernard, while fabulously handsome and affectionate, is not for everyone. Bernie's size and pulling ability alone, not to mention his intelligence, mean that his owner needs to be experienced with large stubborn breeds, able to physically handle him, and to be able to maintain a calm and authoritative demeanor. Bernie's new family should not have any young children. These are not warm weather dogs, they have a low tolerance for heat and should not be exercised in hot weather. Our experience so far is that Bernie does not like other animals (other dogs, cats, and horses) and would like to be an only pet. Bernie appears to be housebroken and his love is always accompanied by lots of drool. He also loves to play in water.
