Meet Benny

Courtesy Post for Benny - in need of a new forever home
Benny is a TDF Alumni and has been with his family for 4 years. Theyve had many ups and downs together and very much wanted it to work. His owners have invested in a professional trainer and also a board and train program to address his lunging towards humans and behavioral challenges. However, they strongly believe Benny’s behavioral challenges will not resolve in their current busy, urban environment. They think a more rural area with less stimulation would help him greatly. He has shown sensitivities towards cyclists, skateboards, planes flying overhead as examples even if he is in the comfort and safety of his backyard. Benny is more trusting of women than men. His owners had him on trazadone for a year but the busy urban world still proves to be challenging and they worry for public safety.
Benny is sweet, affectionate, cuddly and loyal to his owners. They have not been nipped or bitten by him. He also gets along very well with the other dog in home and friend’s golden doodle. However, he can be dog selective and careful, slow and well controlled interactions are 100% necessary. Benny has a high prey drive towards little dogs, cats and other critters. This has also caused issues for the family during a pet sit where it was not disclosed there was a cat in the pet sitter’s home. As a result, Benny is not covered by their home insurance and is one of the reasons for surrender.

1. Age and weight

Around 5-6 years old. 50 lbs

2. Spayed/Neutered or not

Neutered

3. Vaccination status (rabies, DHLPP etc)

All up to date.

4. Being wormed/flea/tick treated monthly?

Yes, with Simparica trio

5. Any medical issues (when did he/she last have a vet check up?)

None. Last checkup was 4/27/2022

6. How does he/she behave around men/women/children/strangers/people on the street/other animals

Most of the time Benny is fine. If someone is running/biking/skateboarding towards us on a narrow sidewalk Benny does not like that and might lunge at them. He has never had an issue with children. Benny usually ignores other similar sized or larger dogs on the street. When given the chance Benny will attack small dogs. He trusts people we bring into our home with the exception of my father in law and brother in law.

7. Normal daily routine (food/exercise)

We let our dogs out into the yard around 530-6am to pee/poop. They will either play outside a bit or come back in and wait to be fed around 7am. We both work from home so we let them go inside/outside as they please throughout the day. We usually walk them around 4pm and then feed them again at 5pm. Then they will go in/out as they please until dark or around 7-8pm.

8. Indoor or outdoor dog? (or both)

They have access to the yard all day but we bring them inside at night or if we leave the home.

9. Level of training (what commands does he/she know/how does he/she walk on leash/reaction to seeing other dogs when on leash)

Benny knows sit, down, and touch. On leash he usually minds his own business unless approached quickly, spontaneously, or in a tight space. This can cause him to lunge and nip at people. He is not the best loose leash walker but he isnt a crazy puller either. Hes just always alert and hunting.

10. Any particular likes/dislikes (how is he/she about being handled/petted – any sensitive areas, like ears, feet etc.)

Benny is very cautious and doesn't like being touched without notice. He trusts us but to a certain level and hes gotten much better. We can brush him now when hes shedding a lot. He will just walk away if uncomfortable. He has never tried to bite me or my wife.

11. How does he/she react to riding in the car/going to the vet/can he/she be lifted?

He doesnt not like the car but has learned to tolerate it. He will sometimes willingly jump in a car but usually has to be carried in. He will sometimes vomit after a long car ride. At the vet he usually needs to picked up and held by me for them to examine him and take his temperature. If needed to be brought back for work, like when he broke his dew claw, he needs to be drugged.

12. Has he/she ever bitten any other animals/people? If so, what was the severity and was medical action needed?

He nips at people when they invade his space or approach him quickly and suddenly but has never bitten anyone viciously. He has killed countless numbers of squirrels, lizards, mice and rats. He's killed a couple snakes. He killed our neighbor's rabbit. He has tried to kill 2 small dogs by getting them in his mouth and viciously shaking them.

13. Any separation anxiety issues or other behavioural issues?

He has separation anxiety if left alone without our other dog. He paces and barks until someone returns. He has never destroyed any furniture or anything in the house.

14. Where did you obtain the dog from and why are you attempting to rehome the dog now? How long have you owned the dog?

Benny was adopted through Two Dog Farms jindo rescue. We are looking for a rural home without many distractions of a modern city. He needs a quiet, calm environment. We are concerned that he is no longer covered by our homeowners insurance and he does not get along with my in-laws. We have had Benny for a little over 4 years.

15. Have you contacted any other rescues for assistance?

No.

16. What are the best methods of contact for people interested in either fostering or adopting your dog?

Contact me personally. allannadel@gmail.com

17. Address and zip code of location of dog? (to enable us to list on Petfinder.com)

Oceanside, CA, 92058
