Benji is quite frankly not a dog for the faint at heart - this is a dog who was extremely under socialized in his prior home - while he is doing amazingly well at his trainers (info below) his behavior when in a home and not in the kennel requires work and extremely strong leadership with prior GSD behavior issues. We will not give up on him and unfortunately the right home has not been found.

Although we have not observed this while he's been with his trainer, two adoptive homes report that he growled and exhibited aggressive behavior to the point where they were fearful - he was returned within 24 hours on two occasions. His trainer is a well respected GSD trainer on the south shore and he is convinced this dog will do quite well in a home if given the chance to work out issues with the right family.

UPDATE 7/5/11:

Benji has been living in a board and train facility for the past 3 weeks and has made tremendous progress! The trainer who is working with Benji specializes in GSD and is so impressed with his resiliency. Benji is now walking beautifully on a leash, has lost some weight, is non-reactive to most other dogs, and seems indifferent to children.

Benji will need a strong leader and someone who will continue his training. True to the breed, Benji thrives in a structured setting and appreciates having a "job" to do. He is a big boy, so he will need someone who will not be intimidated by his size and give in to him. He will need clear boundaries in order to respect his new people.

Benji has responded very well to an E-Collar. PAWS NE and Benji's trainer agree that he is ready to go to his new forever home. We will also consider a foster home for Benji until his forever family comes along. If you would like to learn more about our foster program, please email Benji's adoption coordinator.

A little background on Benji...

Benji is a stunning purebred 7 year old German Shepherd whose owner recently died. She adopted Benji when he was just a pup, so this has been a very difficult time for Benji. He is a big boy at 125 lbs., but we are working on slimming him down.

Benji is up to date on all his vaccinations, neutered, and recently tested negative for heartworm. He's in great shape (just needs to lose a few lbs!!)
