Meet Bear Bear in NH!
Motley family, please let us reintroduce you to Bear Bear. You may remember Bear from when he came to NH May 2022 with severe hip dysplasia. Many of you helped us fundraise so Bear could have surgery on both of his hips. After his surgeries and rehab with his foster family he was adopted. Unfortunately he was recently returned when the family decided they may not be the best fit for him because he had started to nip at them. Please no negative comments- this was emotional all around.
Bear Bear's foster family welcomed him back into their home 2 months ago. During these past 2 months he was seen by our vet, a trainer and will be seeing a rehab vet and his physical therapist in a couple of weeks. He had pretty significant ear infections which have been treated and was restarted on meds and supplements for his hips/pain.
Our vet believes a couple of things could be going on that caused the nipping. There is a chance he is experiencing some pain at the surgical sites related to miniscule tears in the muscle. There is also a chance that because of the length of time he was left in significant pain as a puppy there was damage to the nerve pathways. Now those pathway are a little "wonky" so he anticipates something will be very painful or something that seems minor to us is actually very painful for him.
Bear is really doing wonderfully in his foster home. He is a happy boy who is always wagging his tail. His foster family does know which scenarios to be mindful of and cautious with and are working with him. Things such as grooming and nail trims are done at his pace. With routine brushing a couple of times a week he hasn't developed any more painful mats and now enjoys being brushed.
Although Bear has nipped he has never broken skin. He loves being pet and if he could lay next to (or on top of) his people all day he would be a happy boy. He's learning (with the guidance of an experienced trainer) tolerance and cooperative care.
We know Bear isn't your average dog. He's actually an extraordinary dog, who has overcome so much in his short life. We know in the right home he will continue to blossom. If you think you might be the home Bear Bear is looking for please submit an application.
Bear Bear loves other dogs and has lived with cats. He is housebroken, sleeps through the night in a dog bed next to his foster parents' bed and can be left free in the house during the day.
PLEASE do not email us through the Petfinder inquiry. Emails through Petfinder will more than likely not be answered due to volume of email we receive. Thank you for understanding.
