A Little Bit About Me
If heavyweight boxers were suddenly turned by a stroke of magic into dogs, they would probably look just like Balto - tough, stocky and immovable. But outside appearances are where the transformation would end. Balto is a softy inside. Nuggety and strong on the outside but a marshmallow within.
Balto is a handsome two-year-old American Bully in classic blue-and-white colors and an engaging way of looking you straight in the eye. Far from wanting to go 10 rounds with you, he would rather cuddle. We imagine he would be a perfect couch companion when the latest TV miniseries airs.
Balto arrived at Marin Humane with two canine companions and the trio got along nicely in his former home. Since he's been at Marin Humane, we've learned that he does not do well with small, poofy dogs. It would be best if Balto is the only dog in his new home. If you have a large and/or female dog at home, we'd be okay with that, too. Please bring your pup to meet him so we can see if they'll be compatible. (He's a bit of a rough player.) If you have family, friends, or neighbors with small poofy dogs, just be prepared to do some management. We've been training Balto to wear a Gentle Leader which is a tool that will help immensely if Balto gets too focused on another dog. Also, if you have some really great treats, Balto will pretty much always choose treat over focus on another dog - so that's the other tool in your box to manage Balto and his dog focus.
We found Balto easy to harness and walk around the campus grounds and on off-campus hikes - though he did pull like a mule when he wanted to greet another on-leash dog. Luckily, he enjoys treats, so it's easy to regain his attention. He enjoys taking a lively interest in his surroundings - and when he was introduced to a scenting game at the shelter, he was a star performer.
The shelter offers training classes for scenting games and the bully breeds, so we encourage his adopters to sign up for those classes. (They'll help with the strong focus on canine friends.) Call 415-506-6225 and arrange to meet this lover boy who is just aching to go on a hike with you - and maybe a swim too when summer's back.
