The shy dog we found on the street in Puerto Rico was incredibly grateful to be rescued. He looked at us with one calm brown eye and one light, glimmering blue eye as gorgeous as the Caribbean sky above the island and we knew his name. Azul. Spanish for blue.
Azul is a lovely dog and has been thriving in his foster home. He has the perfect amounts of everything. He's chill much of the time but when he gets the zoomies while playing, he has so much joyful energy. He'll roll around on his back when excited, bringing smiles to everyone's faces. He loves his couch, his stuffed animals, and his treats - but more than that, he loves his foster and gives her kisses upon kisses. When not on his couch, he'll follow his foster around to see if he can give kisses... or get treats. He knows outside is for potty and doesn't have accidents in the house. He is treat motivated, which has made training him a pleasure. He knows Sit, Outside, Treat (natch!) and Paw, and his foster is continuing his training in some other areas. He comes when called. He doesn't counter surf, chew on unauthorized items, or dig in the yard. He is crate trained and is crated when his foster is at work.
He is wonderful with other dogs. His foster has brought in many other foster dogs of all sizes, and he has been a terrific foster sibling to all of them. And high on his list of preferred activities are walks and visits to the dog park. He knows that when his foster grabs the leash, it's time for a walk and he'll wait to be leashed up. He's good on the leash and isn't reactive to other dogs or animals. And he knows when it's time to run and play - at the dog park! He is a great playmate for other dogs there and loves it all.Azul's challenge in getting his forever home is that he will likely always be unsure in bustling, noisy environments. He gamely attends Lucky Dog adoption events, hoping to meet his forever family. But those events often have 60+ dogs in a narrow strip of pavement, four times that number of humans, cars going by on the road in front of the event, and this boy who came all the way from the scary streets has a hard time relaxing and opening up to new people at those times. The loving, wonderful dog who rolls on his back when he's excited and sprawls out on the couch isn't the same dog at adoption events.
He is hoping his humans are out there, the ones who understand that he is shy when meeting new people and set him up for success. He promises so much love and loyalty for all his days in exchange.
Gets Along With: Azul is great with other dogs! We haven't seen him with cats but he can be tested. Because he is shy and unsure of children, he is not recommended for a home with children under the age of 12.
Currently Living at: DC area foster home
Special adoption considerations: Azul is shy and needs to go to a home with a welcoming resident dog to show him the ropes. Because of his shy personality, we do not recommend him for a home with children under the age of 12.
Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training.
TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $460, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. If you are interested in adopting, please complete the Adoption Questionnaire online at bit.ly/adoptaluckydog .
