A good friend of ours was alerted to a bad situation in Rockmart regarding 3 puppies living outside with their mother on a chain. The neighbors were caring for the pups, but the condition of the pups was declining and being outside in the blazing Georgia heat at such a young age was not helping. Augie wasn't using his back legs and his back foot was very badly injured. The owner agreed to release the pups to us since we had fosters step up for them. We are also spaying the mother dog for the owner to prevent any future litters.
Augie presented as a 'swimmer' pup at first, but as the first few weeks passed, our vet now believes Augie is not a 'swimmer' pup at all. His injuries are believed to be the result of some sort of trauma, however our vet does think he is treatable. X-rays did not show any spinal damage and his front legs appear strong, however he does not seem to be able to use his back legs and the remaining toes on the injured foot are broken. We may end up having to remove his back leg, but for now we are letting it heal and seeing how he does. Augie's front legs are super strong and he has no trouble getting around with them as he lets his back legs trail behind, but his foster family is working on exercises and swim therapy to get him to use his back end more. He currently can walk a few steps (or rather drags his legs standing up for a few steps) so his foster family will work on teaching him to pick up his legs, however Augie had FHO surgery on 9/26/19 so he is waiting to be cleared by the vet prior to starting more rehabilitation. He does well with the stretching exercised and he is currently being walked with a sling under his belly for support. If he wants to get somewhere faster, he prefers to lay down and drag his hindlegs, which we try to prevent as much as possible. Augie has a long road to recovery and possibly another FHO in his future on the other side, but we are still optimistic that he will walk and live a 'normal life.'
Augie is loving the life of a pampered house-pup! He doesn't let the fact that he's different slow him down. Augie is happy to play with his doggie foster siblings and snuggle with his humans. Despite his condition, this little guy is full of life and exudes happiness. Augie would likely do best in a home without small children and a home without stairs.
