Meet Appa

Meet Appa! This sweet older gentleman came to the shelter when his owner could no longer care for him. Once in the shelter Appa was VERY shy/fearful, it took him some time to be comfortable with people he didn't know. In order to make Appa more comfortable, he was sent to a foster home.

Personality: Appa is doing very well in a home setting but still takes some time to warm up to new people. He can also be shy/fearful in new environments. Once he is comfortable, he is a sweetheart who just wants to be with his people! He loves rolling in the grass and chasing his Chuck-it!

History: Appa did come into the shelter with another small dog. It has also been reported that he does well with small dogs and dogs his size. Appa would do best with a middle-aged or older dog as he gets annoyed with younger dogs in his face. He is also looking for a feline FREE home.

Energy levels: Appa is an older guy but he does like to get out in the yard and chase his ball, he also enjoys going on walks with his dog friends. Once he runs around a bit, he is very content with sleeping on his dog bed or cuddling up next to you on the couch.

Ideal home: Appa is looking for a quiet/mellow household where there will not be a lot of people coming in and out. His new home should be comfortable with a dog that is shy and fearful of new people or new environments. Due to Appa not being comfortable with strangers, apartment living is not appropriate for him, he needs a yard to run around and chase his ball. Appa is looking for a home with Teens or Adults ONLY and his home should be FREE of feline friends. His new family needs to be open to working with a QUALIFIED TRAINER to help him gain confidence.

From his current owners: He has done really well with our three-year-old male pitty. If he's going to be around dogs, they should be docile. He DOES NOT do well with our two female dogs.

He has had multiple vet visits since we have had him and he is in good health. He has a closed hernia which has caused no problems. When we got him, we were told he has a mild grass allergy. We haven't seen much of that but it might be because of the season/it's been wet out since we've had him.

He is the softest dog I have ever had. He never smells bad even when he runs through mud. He loves to come in and clean himself off.

For being 8, he still has enough energy for playing in the backyard and taking walks, but if he gets to cuddle up to you, he will stay curled up all day.

He is very anxious when new people come over. He has never shown any aggression toward people, but he shakes a lot and barks until he warms up to the new person (treats help).

He is on Trazadone and Fluoxetine. They cost about 12 dollars per month at WalMart.

I would be very careful introducing to new dogs and I would supervise. He has been around a lot of dogs and been totally okay. But I would not take a risk. If another dogs tries to play or is anxious themselves, he might not respond well.

He loves car rides and will sit like a good boy the whole time.
