Meet Andy

Andy is a 71 pound German Shepherd/Hound mix. He is a sweet dog and loves meeting new people. He is a little over a year old and has a lot of energy.

He loves to cuddle and give kisses. He loves to be outside and go for walks. He must be on a leash, a tie out or a fenced in yard. Andy loves to run and chase other animals such as squirrels, birds and deer, so if he is not on a leash or in a fenced yard, he will most likely catch sight or smell of something and run that way. He has a one-track hound mind when he picks up on a scent.

Andy is incredibly smart, for just the short amount of time we have been fostering him he has learned so much. He is able to sit, give paw, wait and go find his ball on command. That being said, Andy LOVES playing fetch and will never get tired of it. He also loves his cage, he often puts himself in it when he is tired and ready for bed, all we have to do is say, “go to bed” and he goes in his cage.

There are a few things we are still working on with Andy. He is not leash trained, so we have started him on a gentle lead and have been practicing, but he still needs a lot of work. He has tried and achieved multiple times at stealing food off the counter/table. That being said he is very food motivated and will do anything for a treat, this has made it easy to train him. I have had Andy around multiple dogs and he does okay, but he is protective when another dog says hi to his human.

He plays well after he calms down, but he needs some more work on socializing. You need to take caution when socializing Andy, he is a strong boy and some dogs he really likes but then others he doesn’t.

He is great with adults and older kids, as for smaller children/babies we are not sure because we haven’t had him around any. He is still a puppy so he can play rough sometimes and forget how big he is, but he just gets super excited. He does well when given baths and being brushed. He is not a fan off getting his nails clipped or his ears cleaned, but he will let you do it. Andy is a big baby and just wants all your love.

We got Andy January 18th and have had him since. Before that we were told he was a stray from West Virginia until rescued by the Hart Organization. He was underweight, had heartworms and Lyme disease. Since then we have gotten Andy up to the recommended weight for a dog his size and he has completed all his heartworm treatments making him Heartworm free! Lyme disease unfortunately does not go away; however, we haven’t seen this affect Andy at all, many dogs with this disease live long happy lives and I don’t believe this is going to be a problem for Andy. This boy brings so much joy to a household and will love you forever.

If you would like to meet Andy, please go to our website at www.rescueahart.org and fill out an online adoption application.

All HART dogs are spayed/neutered, microchipped and up to date on all vaccines, including bordatella and rabies. They are heartworm tested and on preventative for heartworm, fleas, and ticks. If you are interested in any of our pets, you must complete an online dog adoption application at www.rescueAhart.org . The application will put you in touch with this wonderful dog's foster family so you can schedule a meeting. Thanks! www.rescueAhart.org
