Meet Andy
Andy is a gorgeous young adult, 62 pound, Shepherd/Hound mix who was found as a stray in West Virginia. This big boy is very goofy, loving, active, LOVES people, and is extremely treat motivated which should make training him easier. We're not sure how long Andy was fending for himself in the wild, so some basic training is likely in order. While Andy is good with other dogs he does not like cats at all. He would absolutely love a home to call his own and go on all sorts of adventures!
Once at our vet's office, this poor sweetie tested positive for heartworm and Lyme, but that hasn’t affected his happy personality one bit!
Lyme is a tick borne disease that is not contagious to other dogs or humans but will remain in his system, throughout his life. Andy may have an occasional flare-up which would be indicated by joint pain/inflammation, limping, lethargy and possible loss of appetite. Typically a dose of antibiotics is enough to make the disease go dormant again. To help control the Lyme, Andy will need a yearly Lyme vaccine. Should he have multiple flare ups in a short amount of time, his kidneys could be affected. Lyme has become more prevalent in the southern states, and many dogs with this disease have lived long happy lives!
Heartworm disease is easily preventable with heartworm preventative, which Andy unfortunately did not receive from his previous owner. It is treatable/curable but will take several months to do. Hence, we're looking for a local ‘foster to adopt‘ home for Andy.
HART will cover the cost of his heartworm and initial Lyme treatment but Andy would be much more comfortable being in a home instead of boarding at the vet's office. Once the heartworm is treated, Andy can be neutered and officially adopted.
If you would be interested in fostering to adopt Andy, please go to our website, at www.rescueahart.org, and fill out both a foster and adoption application.
All HART dogs are spayed/neutered, microchipped and up to date on all vaccines, including bordatella and rabies. They are heartworm tested and on preventative for heartworm, fleas, and ticks. If you are interested in any of our pets, you must complete an online dog adoption application at www.rescueAhart.org . The application will put you in touch with this wonderful dog's foster family so you can schedule a meeting. Thanks! www.rescueAhart.org
