REQUIREMENTS: live in the Rochester NY area and have a physically fenced in yard for her to safely run and play in.

Born 02/22/19; approx 40 lbs, lab mix (best guess); house-trained, good with other dogs; not sure how she is with cats; all vet care done.

Statistically, black dogs are the most commonly overlooked dogs in shelters. Amelia’s story starts in the summer of 2020 when she arrived at a Texas high kill shelter. Thankfully our partner rescue pull her out of the shelter and she began treatment for heartworm. While heartworm is far less common in New York, it is an issue they deal with frequently in Texas. After months without finding her forever home in Texas she took the long drive up to her foster home in New York. She has two foster brothers one bigger and one smaller than her. Amelia is good with dogs of any size but can be shy at first. After she warms up she enjoys running with them, playing fetch, tug of war, wrestling and sharing a good stick to chew on. Amelia does require a home with a well fenced in yard. She may be a bit of an escape artist until she fella settled into her new home. But once she has decided she is home she is the most loyal dog you will ever meet. She loves to bop her foster mom and nuzzle in hair. She even enjoys being hugged. Amelia still enjoys some independence. Currently Amelia has her own room set up where she will go to when she wants her alone time; it’s nothing personal she just likes to nap and relax on her own. Because of Amelia’s escape artist past it is not recommended that she goes to a home with young children. Loud noises also make her nervous and she tends to run from any loud noises. She is also afraid of the dark and will not go outside once the sunsets but that’s ok because she has proven great with potty training. She loves going for walks and has great leash manors, never pulls or barks while out on a walk; cars do make her nervous so she tends to slow down and watch them when they pass by. She warms up to women much quicker and will need any man in her life to work slowly with her. She has some anxiety in her crate that’s why her foster mom set her up her own “room” but her foster mom has never worried about crating her because she is so laid back and potty trained. Amelia’s favorite thing is food and every day after breakfast and dinner is when she likes to play the most. She will also show off her skills for a good treat. She knows the sit command and may be starting to catch onto the paw command soon! On sunny days Amelia will lay out soaking up the sunshine, rolling in the grass and asking for belly rubs for hours. Amelia has been in rescue for nearly a year and her foster family knows that her forever home will find her soon!
