AJ is a very handsome, friendly boy and his black coat glistens. AJ is often noticed and approached when we take him out in public and he is happy to greet people. When AJ sees you across the yard, he runs to be with you. He is very loyal. He is still young and energetic and needs his exercise. He LOVES to play fetch with the launcher. We keep the launcher on a ledge with a few balls, and he runs right to it to show us what he wants to do when first entering our back yard. He goes after the ball and returns it to us as we throw the next ball.
AJ LOVES to go for walks and rides and if you leave the hatch open on your vehicle, he will make a bee line for it and jump right in hoping you are planning to take him someplace like Starbucks for a pup cup, or the park for a good walk or maybe the Dog Park to play, or how about all of those outings together.
I spend part of the day with AJ, while working on my computer. He will come and ask me for a treat from time to time but mostly he will either entertain himself with his toys or lie on one of his beds, or right beside me and take a nap.
AJ wants to please his people and is very ball or treat motivated. Like most dogs that have been strays, AJ is very food driven and when it is time for him to eat, he devours his food as fast as possible. We now feed him with a slow feed bowl to force him to eat slower.
He has tried to help us when we are working on a project in the yard. He is good at alerting us to any Amazon or UPS truck that dares to approach our house. AJ is a quick, very enthusiastic learner. When we first got AJ, he jumped up on us. We showed AJ that jumping on people was not allowed, and he quit doing that the first day (except when he is focused on his ball and you haven’t thrown it yet). Exercising him with the launcher has helped to keep him calm. He may not be your typical black and tan German Shepherd, but he has a great personality and is going to make someone an incredibly special pet.
Vet Advice: Since AJ is now ready to move on to a new home, we took him to our Vet for a check-up. The Vet says AJ can resume activity, as long as he doesn’t play in the extreme heat. AJ should have a heartworm test next August 25, 2026, when his heartworm vaccine expires. At that time, he can go on whatever heartworm treatment his new owner chooses to use. AJ’s hips were examined and the Vet found no symptoms to lead him to believe that AJ has an issue. AJ is in excellent health and looking forward to meeting you. He says “Come On and Rescue Me.”
