Meet whiskers

This is a personal testimony. I have been around cats my whole life. I love them, and I an avid supporter of animal welfare and enjoy spending time with the cats at the shelter. I'm rather acquainted with cat behavior. What is usually labeled as aggression is a fearful response. The source that produces the response can often be identified, such as a new environment, too much stimulation from people, unfamiliar animals, overwhelming smells of others, and so on. I have seen many frightened cats, but none acted as terrified as she. Without even trying to touch her, she let me know that that would not be happening. Whiskers would hiss so loudly that spit would fly. She put herself as high as she could on the cat tree in the room, signaling that she felt threatened. I was scared to turn my back. What if she reached that furry arm out and clawed? I didn't need a haircut yet. So, I crouched down and backed out of the room. This happened even if I was on the opposite side of the door, looking through the glass. I had seen her do it to others, but either way I wouldn't take it personal. So, I didn't pursue her any further. She needed to settle in at her own pace, however much one could settle in there. Time passed, and she was put in the community room. Passing through the room one day, this tiny orange tabby came running to rub against my legs. She flipped over, legs in the air, inviting me to rub her belly. I was enchanted by this little furry baby's desire for love. I didn't know her name (I did not make the connection that this was Whiskers right away). Then, all of a sudden (it was a true lightbulb moment) W H I S K E R S! I was so stunned and happy that she learned to trust. She was so social and adorable. Her Amber eyes full of wonder and looking up at me,. I admired her beautiful orange stripes. Light and dark orange, with white socks and bib. I saw her tonight. I sat on the floor and she came right over with her friend Nome (the best boy ever). They smushed their heads together and then prompted me to pet them. It wasn't a camera moment. It was a moment too sweet to be interrupted by a camera. These beautiful orange and white cats, both once fearful and avoidant (but Whiskers takes that crown) are absolutely unwound into a happier self. And I know that an even happier self is inside waiting for when they come home. She definitely personified the plea of "taking a chance" on someone, of just waiting and aiding in adjustment, of believing that all cats are good yet different. She let me know that everyone else can and should have their time to shine. Signed and sworn to be truthful,Whiskers biggest fan
