Meet Sweet Selena

Selena is a 4- to 5-year-old, American Shorthair that has had a difficult start to life and is in need of a loving owner and home. She is being cared for by a private rescuer who helped out with a hoarding situation Selena was part of. Selena is shy but has come a long way in showing her love and affection. Check out her video ( and see how she has learned to trust and become a real sweet heart, despite everything that she has been through.

Good with other cats? She is timid of other cats, but shows interest in kittens

Good with dogs? unknown

Good with kids? unknown

Is your cat litterbox trained? yes

Is your cat declawed? No

History: Selena came to me in about April of 2014. I was helping a rescue I had been volunteering with to trap and re-home more than 20 cats from a hoarder situation. When I got Selena, we were going to release her into my yard as an outdoor cat, because the rescue I was working with thought she was semi-feral. I quickly realized that she was not feral, but very timid, and I knew that I could not release this petite, adorable girl as an outdoor kitty.

She would hiss and swipe at me when I would go to her cage to feed her. But after a while, she would meow instead of hiss, and let me pet her instead of swiping at me. I love that this shy, hissy girl now lets me pet her, and pick her up, and even hold her on my lap. She now enjoys chin scratches and back rubs. She has come a long way, and I know she has the personality to come even further.

What adjectives describe your cat? Cute, shy, timid

Best qualities: Although she is shy, she can also be quite the attention grabber.

Favorite activities: Watching the stray kitties in my backyard. Getting back and chin scratches.

Loud/quiet: does your cat meow or vocalize a lot? She is very quiet. I rarely hear her meow.

What do you think the ideal home for this cat would be? Selena would be happiest as an only kitty. She needs a home with patient, understanding parents, who know that she will hide for quite a while, and probably swipe at them every once in a while until she is used to them. I think the person who understands this will be rewarded with lots of purrs and a cat who will eventually learn to be a loving lap kitty.
