Meet Sunshine

Sunshine is a sweet 3-4 year old toothless ball of love! That's right, she has no teeth! And she loves everyone. The reason she has no teeth is because she had a disease called stomatitis, where a cat is allergic to the enamel in their teeth, causing severe inflammation and even repeat infections. This disease can be very painful and the only long-term solution to reduce her pain and maximize her health was to remove all the teeth in a procedure called a full mouth extraction, which in Sunshine's case was very needed.
She originally came to us from a hoarding case in Cache Valley when she was less then a year old, and she is very likely inbred. At less than a year old she already needed a dental due to retained baby teeth and stomatitis. After getting her all fixed up we adopted her to a nice family with the disclaimer that she would need further dentals in the future, and eventually all the teeth out, to which her adoptive family readily agreed. Unfortunately, a few months ago we were contacted by Davis county shelter that Sunshine was found as a stray, the family was not responding to attempts to contact them, and her mouth was in such bad shape they thought she was a 12 year old cat. It's clear no dental care was done in the last few years.

We immediately took her back into the rescue and got her the care she needed. It's taken a few months for her to recover completely from this ordeal but she's doing fantastic! She's still gaining confidence with her mouth (she still thinks it will hurt when she tries to play with toys) but she eats dry food with no problem. She gets along great with other cats and people. We have not tested her with dogs, but as long as they are nice I don't think she would have any problem with them. She loves to sleep under the covers and get ear and belly rubs. As a young kitten she would steal fruit snack wrappers and hide them under the bed. I hope as she gets more confidence with her mouth, she will do so again. She is really just a sweet ray of sunshine!
