Sterling (paralyzed at waist)'s Story

Sterling is a very special boy.

He's a brave, outgoing, extremely friendly kitty whose name matches his stellar personality. Everyone who meets Sterling quickly falls in love with him and says he is such a special guy. With a dog-like spirit of eagerness, this 1-year-old kitten (at heart) is excited to meet new people and will force them to pet him for hours! He is tender and loves to be held, often like a baby, to get all the neck and head scratches you'll give. Sometimes when she tries to put Sterling down, he grabs his foster mom's face with his paws as if to say, "NO! Hold me!!"

Sterling has special needs, as he is paralyzed from the waist down. But that doesn't hold him back, literally... you can't hold this guy back! He adores playtime, especially with the wild wand toy his foster mom whips around in the air like a bird or bug, or the laser pointer! He plays with his kitty friends and runs around the house, scooting his booty around with him, and even shows off his "Tokyo drift" once in a while! He loves to climb on the couch and cat trees. He uses his custom-made stairs to get to the window seat, and the various carpeted ramps that were made to give him more access to the various perches and comfy furniture seats.

Sterling needs to have his bladder and bowels expressed 2-3 times daily and as long as a schedule is kept, he will not eliminate on his own, and therefore does not require diapering. However, putting him in some cute baby pants or a "drag bag" would possibly keep him from getting reoccurring and sometimes antibiotic-resistant urinary-tract infections. He's not had one to date, and the vet says Sterling is a very healthy and happy boy!! He even purrs through the entire length of his 'potty time' and doesn't mind it at all! He still like to "cat" and sometimes will dig in the litterbox lightly because he sees all his friends doing it, so Sterling's foster mom keeps the litter box down and puts him in it to express him (it's the thought that counts, right?)

Every one he meets wants to take this amazing kitty home, but he's looking for someone who is equally as special as he is who can take care of his needs religiously and also shower him with affection and love. He doesn't mind car rides as long as he can be beside his human to get some pets, so we think Sterling could make the perfect "baby" for anyone wanting a constant companion. Currently, we are looking for a cat carriage to take him on walks!

Sterling's history:

He came to his foster mom at about 5 days old and she quickly realized something was wrong. Sterling’s back legs and tail were limp and had no reflex response. We believe, based finding him on a second story deck along with other telling factors, that a bird of prey snatched the newborn Sterling from out of his mother's nest, digging its three sharp talons into the kitten’s lower back around his spine. When the bird flew by the sliding glass doors of a two-story townhouse and landed on the roof to have his kitten snack, this movement and sound alerted the homeowner's puppy and sent the dog into a barking tizzy. The commotion startled the bird, causing it to fly away and abandon the kitten on the steeply pitched roof. Sterling then seemingly rolled off of the roof and slammed onto the deck below, thereby leaving no trace of his assailant, except for the three puncture wounds on Sterling’s back. No one, not even his neurologist, can say if it was the bird's talons or the fall that caused his paralysis. He also lost his pinky toe to the first knuckle in the ordeal.

Thankfully, it has been confirmed by his neurologist that he has no feeling/pain response in this back limbs or tail. He cannot feel the lower part of his back or lower abdomen as well, and doesn't seem to be in any pain from the condition. It is the opinion of his neurologist and vet team that he is not a candidate for surgeries or alternative therapies and likely will remain paralyzed, with no feeling, and need expressed for life. But they expect he will live a long and happy life with a normal cat lifespan!

Don't let the "special needs" status fool you, this boy will add so much joy to your world! Sterling is DEFINITELY worth the tiny bit of extra care and will return your generosity 100 times back in the way he will enrich your life! He is fiercely loyal, undeniably charming, and too dang handsome for his own good!

Please reach out with any questions or concerns you have by emailing his foster mom at applications.hart@gmail.com.
