Meet Stella

Stella and her brother Lincoln came into foster on January 31st. They are an older pair of around 12 and quite bonded. Their owner is sick and can no longer look after them so they need a new loving forever home. This is what their foster has to say about this duo.

"Stella was more reserved than Lincoln, often sleeping inside one of the cat houses they arrived with. She was fairly slow moving, especially her back legs. Lincoln quite quickly made himself at home, and immediately sought out cuddles.

The vet saw them on Feb 4th, and confirmed that Stella had quite a bit of stiffness in her joints, and prescribed medication for pain and a supplement for her joints. Lincoln was put on a diet, as the vet was worried about a risk of diabetes. He said to feed them ¼ cup of dry food and 1½ to 2 small cans of wet food a day.

Lincoln is very food motivated, and Stella is a grazer, so their meals need to be supervised as Lincoln will otherwise muscle Stella out of the way and steal her food. Since she is taking pain meds every 12 hours and the supplement once a day, I've been giving them ½ can of food at breakfast, lunch, and dinner times. They become quite vocal when it's time to eat, so I also have been giving ? cup dry food first thing in the morning (around 7) and again before bed (around 10).

Since Stella grazes, she'll eat a bit of her food (wet or dry) and then wander off, so I've been moving her food up out of Lincoln's reach, and she'll meow at you to get her bowl back and eat a bit more, this can happen a few times through the day. She will eat the pain meds mixed with food, but does not like the taste of the supplement, so that one needs to be administered orally. She doesn't love it but doesn't fight too much, it's quite easy.

Stella does not like the taste of salmon, so I've been getting them chicken and trout wet food. Lincoln will eat anything.

During the day, the cats nap. They will get up and move around, relocating between their preferred napping spots. A spot of sun near a window is prime real estate. They like to be close to you, they will both snuggle up on or near you if you're resting on the couch. They are very physically affectionate, and seek out cuddles whenever possible, but also will nap on their own just fine.

Lincoln gets a bit jealous if Stella is getting more attention, or if she comes too close while he's eating, and that sometimes results in him chasing and swatting at her later that day. This is usually mitigated with a bit of play, a string toy interests them both. Since Stella has been medicated, she's quite active during play, and will chase the string around. Lincoln prefers to sit in one spot and swat at it as it passes.

They share two litter boxes and water bowls with no issue. They don't tend to cuddle together, but will tolerate each other when cuddling with you (although Lincoln will sometimes consider swatting at Stella if he's feeling proprietary).

At night, Lincoln will cuddle up next to you, pretty much whether you want it or not. Stella will either curl up on your other side, or sleep at the foot of the bed, although she'll move sometime during the night. She starts to sing in the mornings around 6:30, and Lincoln will start to either tap you on the nose or suggest you get up to feed them by knocking things off the side table. A quick kibble snack placates them till their breakfast around 9-10.

Lincoln needs to be brushed fairly often, as he cannot reach his own back to clean. They both happily tolerate brushing, Lincoln will let you know when he's lost patience with it. Clipping his claws is easy, he puts up minimal fuss, but Stella doesn't like it and will try to swat or bite. This is the only thing Stella gets angry about, and she's quick to forgive.

Overall they are delightful sweethearts, and would be easy company in the care of someone with the time throughout the day to pay them some attention and feed them."
