Meet Porter

Porter is part of the Kitty Keeper program!

Porter transferred to Good Mews in 2022 from Cobb Co Animal Services along with 36 other kitties. He arrived at that facility as a stray. Porter is an outgoing and adventurous guy but unfortunately, he got off to a bad start when he first arrived. He bit a staff member and a volunteer. Then he continued to nip at people, despite always asking for pets and a lap to sit on. We feel he was probably overstimulated from all the changes in his life and going from living outside to a shelter with 60+ roommates. Because of this, he wore a yellow collar, so visitors knew to go slow with him. But we are HAPPY to say that after almost two years, Porter has not nip anyone and has graduated and was able to ditch that yellow collar!

Porter is a very social cat and gets along with the other kitties and loves attention from humans. Not long ago, while healing from a medical issue, Porter went to foster for a while, to just get a change of scenery. While there, he loved it! He helped his foster mom work and sat beside her most of the day, making sure she stayed focused. He loved curling up in the kitty beds he had around his room. Porter had never been in a home before and he literally thought he was in heaven! So we know once he finds a forever home, he is going to love it and will be a super companion!

Because this guy lived outside for the first years of his life, he is FIV+ (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus). FIV is a virus that makes kitty's immune systems a little less strong so sometimes they get upper respiratory sniffles or dental infections more often. This is not typically a big deal, and we just want the adopter to get him to the vet sooner than later if showing signs of these issues. When he came to us he was also heartworm + and unfortunately it appears he has residual damage to his lungs in the form of either asthma or chronic bronchitis (chronic inflammation) so he is on Prednisolone. He is also on a behavioral medication which can likely be weaned in his new home.

Porter is an awesome, loving kitty and just loves every human he meets. He enjoys being petted and getting attention from staff, volunteers, and visitors. We just know that once in a home, his adopter will adore him as much as we do. Porter would do best in a home with experienced cat people that can care for his medical needs.

Porter is FIV+ but dont let that scare you! FIV+ cats can live safely with non-FIV+ cats as long as the kitties get along. They can also live long, healthy lives like any other cat. Our FIV+ cats are not separated from the other cats in the shelter. To read more about it, visit our website: https://goodmews.org/wp-content/uploads/1115-Animal-Care-Feline-FIV.pdf
