The abnormality consists of incomplete formation of the septum separating the lower heart chambers (ventricles). The defect in the septum forces the lungs and heart to work harder. VSD does increase the risk of endocarditis (infection of the aortic valve), therefore, prophylactic antibiotics are recommended during times of increased risk of bacteremia (foot pad lacerations, dental cleanings, skin infections, surgery, etc.) If lethargy, fever, or enlarged lymph nodes are noted by your veterinarian, immediate recheck with the cardiologist is necessary as endocarditis is life threatening and requires rapid and aggressive treatment. .
